As autumn arrives, a rare September nor\u2019easter<\/a> could bring coastal flooding, high winds, rain and coastal erosion to the region and potentially disrupt travel, meteorologists warned Tuesday.<\/p>\n

A full moon\u2019s tides will exacerbate the situation, the National Weather Service noted.<\/p>\n

The storm\u2019s path depends a bit on which weather system wins out between a high-pressure zone forming near the Great Lakes and a low-pressure system that\u2019s moving north<\/a> along the East Coast. The closer they get, The Weather Channel predicted, the stronger the winds will get.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe low\u2019s track will determine the strength of the winds and overall intensity,\u201d NWS meteorologist James Connolly told the Daily News.<\/p>\n

It was slated to take shape Wednesday and Thursday, taking \u201ca slow track up to the Northeast,\u201d Connolly said. \u201cThis is where the questions come up\u201d as to whether it moves toward Cape Cod, out across the open Atlantic, or back toward the coast. \u201cThat remains to be seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the storm skews offshore, the impact will be lesser, but if it drifts closer to land, it could become a \u201cfull-blown nor\u2019easter [that] could lead to major travel disruptions due to flooding rain<\/a>, wind gusts that could trigger power outages and significant coastal flooding,\u201d according to AccuWeather, noting it could even \u201ctake on some characteristics of a tropical storm.\u201d<\/p>\n

In that scenario the strongest winds and rain would hit the New York City metro area on Friday and early Saturday<\/a> Connolly said, which would put a damper on the Global Citizen Festival<\/a> taking place in Central Park this weekend.<\/p>\n

Three years ago, a heavy storm during that same music festival led to extensive damage to the park\u2019s Great Lawn<\/a>, necessitating its closure for several months.<\/p>\n

The storm \u201cwill at the very least result in multiple episodes of minor to localized moderate coastal flooding<\/a>, dangerous rip currents, and some beach flooding\/erosion,\u201d the National Weather Service predicted.<\/p>\n

New England was expected to see the biggest impact.<\/p>\n
