EDGEMERE, Queens (WABC) — Police in Queens are searching for a killer who shot a 14-year-old boy in the back<\/a> who was on his way to play basketball with a friend.<\/p>\n

Detectives think Malakai Adams was shot by someone who was trying to steal his scooter.<\/p>\n

The shooting happened at 51-24 Beach Channel Drive at the Ocean Bay Apartments in the Edgemere section just after 3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

When police arrived, they found the 14-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the back at his apartment complex.<\/p>\n

Adams was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

The suspect, a man wearing a black sweatshirt and white shorts, fled on a scooter east on Beach 51st Street.<\/p>\n

The area near Beach Channel Drive is no stranger to violence.<\/p>\n

Police say this is at least the sixth murder in the 101st Precinct the year, which is up from three at this point last year.<\/p>\n

There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n
