Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan is being considered for listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.<\/p>\n
Ben Chmiel is the Senior Planner in Manhattan\u2019s Planning and Development Department.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s being nominated because it\u2019s a historic cemetery. It\u2019s very unique in its layout and it\u2019s very representative of cemeteries as they were being laid out at the time and it\u2019s maintained its integrity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you just walk around it, you can just feel that it\u2019s historic.\u201d<\/p>\n
The designation, if awarded, would change how additions or alterations to the cemetery would work.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnytime you have a historic district, there are certain restrictions. Anything that requires a permit to be constructed or modified has to be reviewed, either by city administration or the Historic Resources Board. And that\u2019s just because of state historic preservation law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust to make sure that it\u2019s going to be historically compatible and won\u2019t damage or destroy anything historic. \u201c<\/p>\n
New graves themselves wouldn\u2019t be restricted, however.<\/p>\n
The City Commission will discuss the matter at their Sept 22 meeting.<\/p>\n
