While a shake can be a part of any healthy diet, and the answer to that question will ultimately depend upon your specific dietary needs, when you compare the calorie count, total fat and many other factors, one clear winner definitely emerges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the calorie department, Dairy Queen comes out on top; their drink has 710, while Sonic’s\u00a0contains 720. In total fat content, Sonic also has more, with 27 grams of total fat to Dairy Queen’s 23. Dairy Queen’s shake has 16 grams of saturated fat, 4 grams less than Sonic’s 20, and a DQ’s sip has less cholesterol than a Sonic’s one \u2014 60 versus 100 milligrams, respectively.\u00a0Sonic’s shake is also saltier; they serve up\u00a0720 milligrams in each cup of shake, and Dairy Queen’s drink has 290 sodium milligrams only.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These two delicious treats are nearly equal when it comes to carbohydrates \u2014 Dairy Queen’s has 110 milligrams and Sonic’s boasts 112. The two are also in a dead heat when it comes to sugar, with 96 grams in Dairy Queen’s shake and 95 in Sonic’s. When it comes to protein, Sonic has 14 grams and Dairy Queen’s got 16. Additionally, each has one gram of dietary fiber in each container. In the end, judging by most factors, Dairy Queen definitely produces the healthiest shake, as it has less sodium, less fat, and less cholesterol, and all other elements to consider are pretty much equal.<\/p>\n

But how do Dairy Queen and Sonic’s shakes compare taste-wise? In 2025, Tasting Table ranked 10 fast food chocolate milkshakes<\/a>, and Dairy Queen came in at 7th place while Sonic’s finished in 4th. Our reviewer compared Dairy Queen’s shake to Wendy’s Frosty, which we also tried and ranked<\/a>,\u00a0in a good way. “Overall, it’s not super rich, yet it has that classic, can’t-go-wrong kind of taste that makes it a reliable pick \u2014 and one that stands above the previous burger joint options,” they said.<\/p>\n

Sonic’s version of the treat, meanwhile, was so thick our reviewer could barely slurp it through their straw. “The light grayish color of the shake clued me in that it wasn’t going to be super chocolatey, and this assumption proved correct.” While their treat wasn’t chocolate-heavy, the taste was deliciously rich, resulting in the shake ending up higher on the list than Dairy Queen’s \u2014 perhaps aided by the fact that the fast food chain uses real ice cream in its milkshakes<\/a>. Ultimately, if you want a lighter shake and a healthier option, then Dairy Queen will treat you right. But if you want a richly flavored shake and nothing but, then Sonic is definitely your best option.<\/p>\n
