The United Nations General Assembly continued Tuesday in Manhattan, with President Trump speaking<\/a> to the assembled delegates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There were also protests in the area, as was expected.<\/p>\n

Nearly two dozen people were taken into custody at 8:43 a.m., prior to Mr. Trump’s arrival, during a demonstration at Second Avenue and 43rd Street. The demonstration was peaceful, and so were the arrests, the NYPD said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The demonstrators sat down in the crosswalk, carried signs and chanted messages critical of the president. Police officers could be heard warning them they’d be subject to arrest if they remained in the roadway. They were eventually arrested and are expected to be issued summonses and released.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It wasn’t the only protest Tuesday morning. While Mr. Trump was speaking, hundreds of Iranian Americans protested outside the U.N. to call on the international community to not only condemn the Iranian regime, but also to hold them accountable. Iranian Americans, former political prisoners, politicians and human rights activists attended the rally, saying they want to see the international community stand up and stand with the Iranian people against their leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That protest came as Iran’s delegation attended the U.N. General Assembly after nearly seven months of war with the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?” Mr. Trump said at the U.N.<\/p>\n

The president said Iran must make a deal or risk annihilation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I believe we’ll make a deal right after the election, because it doesn’t make sense for them not to,” Mr. Trump said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Every afternoon, they would call a list, and these people – we knew that every afternoon means that they are going to the gallows,” former political prisoner Shirin Nariman said at the demonstration outside.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nariman was arrested for protesting the government in Iran as a teenager. She knew she was lucky to get out of prison alive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The only way to stop this execution and suppression is for the regime to go away, to fall, to be changed,” she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She added, “Every year we come, but this is very important because of the rise of executions in Iran, and we are asking world leaders to stop talking to Iran or tolerating Iran one way or another. But also, war is not the answer.”<\/p>\n

Protesters seemed doubtful any deal will lead to lasting change.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This regime will not change its behavior, nor will it be overthrown with foreign military intervention,” said Majid Sadeghpour of the Organization of Iranian American Communities. “Support the Iranian people, and their organized opposition to overthrow this regime … the Iranian people’s fight to overthrow this regime needs America’s recognition.”<\/p>\n

That protest, too, was also peaceful and conducted amid a heavy NYPD presence. There have been no arrests or incidents associated with that particular protest so far.<\/p>\n

More protests are expected again Wednesday, when Iran’s president is scheduled to address the U.N. General Assembly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last week, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch\u00a0outlined the extensive security plan<\/a> for the U.N. General Assembly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Later this week, pro-Palestinian demonstrators are expected to be out in force when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> speaks to U.N. delegates. Jewish organizations are planning counter-protests.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tisch said the NYPD is prepared for “multiple protests every day,” adding, “As always, the NYPD will facilitate First Amendment activity. At the same time, there will be no tolerance for violence or destruction of property.”<\/p>\n

The U.N. General Assembly also brings with it street closures and Gridlock Alert Days<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
