Drivers caught speeding in MTA work zones will now face fines as a new phase of the agency’s speed camera enforcement program takes effect.<\/p>\n
The program targets drivers traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit in active work zones.<\/p>\n
Work zone speed cameras were first authorized in 2021 for state highway construction areas, as part of an effort to reduce crashes and protect road workers.<\/p>\n
The program has since expanded to MTA Bridges and Tunnels, including the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Throgs Neck Bridge, and RFK Bridge.<\/p>\n
“With speeding tickets and people being anxious to get to where they [have] to go, I can see it happening,” said Mark Anthony, a driver from Throgs Neck.<\/p>\n
The first phase began on June 30, when drivers recorded speeding received warnings instead of tickets.<\/p>\n
Starting now, drivers caught speeding by work zone cameras will be fined $50 for a first offense. A second violation within 18 months will result in a $75 fine, while additional violations within that period will carry a $100 penalty.
Some drivers believe these changes will lead to positive results.<\/p>\n
“I would agree with that, because [a car] is a loaded gun when you’re driving,” said Junior from Throgs Neck. “[A car] is worse than a pistol.”<\/p>\n
“I don’t feel bad about this [new change], because if I make a mistake, then I have to pay,” said Eddy, another driver from Throgs Neck.<\/p>\n
Others, however, feel that the fines will only create more problems for drivers rather than fixing the issue.<\/p>\n
“I don’t agree with getting tickets period,” Anthony said. “The problem of getting tickets for just being out and about is ridiculous.”<\/p>\n
