ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10<\/a>) \u2014 Mobile sports betting across New York State has prompted a surge in both revenue and problem gambling calls.<\/p>\n

A new report<\/a> by the Office of the New York State Comptroller found that mobile sports betting generated $1.3 billion in state revenue for the 2026 fiscal year. At the same time, increased betting led to an 8.5% increase in calls to the state\u2019s problem gambling hotline.<\/p>\n

The majority of mobile sports betting is done through apps like FanDuel and DraftKings, which is why the state says accessibility plays a large role in its prevalence. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe data show this is really popular among young people, [the] generation that has grown tethered to their smartphones,\u201d Deputy Comptroller for Budget and Policy Analysis Maria Doulis said. \u201cThat phenomenon makes it very easy and attractive.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports noted that the majority of users and individuals seeking help are between 18 and 35 years old. <\/p>\n

New York estimates that there are roughly seven million accounts, with the average user betting $3,500 annually. The average bet, the comptroller\u2019s office noted, is $42. <\/p>\n

The Office of Addiction Services and Supports said it\u2019s exploring more ways to help New Yorkers struggling with addiction. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe are looking to expand service use and provide expanded opportunity across the board,\u201d Rebecca Cooper with the office said.<\/p>\n
