\n A slimmed-down Iranian delegation arrived in New York this week for the United Nations General Assembly<\/a>, as President Donald Trump touted the possibility of \u201cvery big things\u201d ahead amid the war in the Middle East.\n <\/p>\n

\n A founding member of the UN, Iran has maintained a presence at the global diplomatic event for decades, led most recently by the country\u2019s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, and his predecessor, Ebrahim Raisi.\n <\/p>\n

\n But the presence of Iran\u2019s delegation this year, on the home turf of a country with which it remains at war<\/a>, is unprecedented in recent years.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Trump administration has said it will allow Iran\u2019s \u201ccore delegation,\u201d which will include Pezeshkian, to come to New York.\n <\/p>\n

\n This year\u2019s delegation will be smaller than during the 2025 event, months before the US-Iran war started, a State Department spokesperson said Thursday.\n <\/p>\n

\n Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday, according to state media, while Pezeshkian traveled to the US on Tuesday. The exact makeup of Iran\u2019s wider delegation is not yet known.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cConsistent with our host country obligations, the core delegation from the Iranian regime will be able to attend UN General Assembly High Level Week,\u201d the State Department spokesperson said.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe delegation will be under travel restrictions and will face prohibitions on the purchase of luxury and other goods per our (sanctions) policy,\u201d the official said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Section 11 of the UN Headquarters Agreement states that US authorities \u201cshall not impose any impediments\u201d on UN officials or representatives of member states to travel to or from the New York headquarters.\n <\/p>\n

\n No US strikes on Iran have been publicly reported for more than two weeks.\n <\/p>\n

\n Despite the lull, Trump indicated that major decisions on Iran may be approaching \u2014 a statement that risks aggravating tensions between the two nations ahead of the diplomatic gathering.\n <\/p>\n

\n Iran, meanwhile, has warned that any new US attack would trigger sustained strikes on US bases and interests across the region.\n <\/p>\n

\n Iran\u2019s central military command said Sunday it had received information that the US, with the backing of some regional countries, \u2060is preparing to resume actions against \u2060Iran, the country\u2019s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported.\n <\/p>\n

\n Speaking to Fox News over the weekend, Trump said he was in \u201cdeciding mode\u201d and that \u201cvery big things\u201d could happen soon. He did not provide details.\n <\/p>\n

\n Yes. Iran has attended the General Assembly in various forms for decades, through turbulent times as well as moments of diplomatic progress. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressed the assembly in 1987 when he was president, two years before he became supreme leader. Khamenei was killed in late February in an Israeli airstrike at the outset of the US-Israeli war with Iran.\n <\/p>\n

\n Notably, in 2015, Iran\u2019s then-president, Hassan Rouhani, told world leaders that the landmark Iran nuclear deal signed that year \u2014 a focal point of President Barack Obama\u2019s foreign policy \u2014 was a \u201cvictory over war\u201d and should help bring peace to the Middle East.\n <\/p>\n

\n This year, though, the peace that Rouhani spoke of feels increasingly distant, with no sign of resumed negotiations between Washington and Tehran.\n <\/p>\n

\n The closest international equivalent to this year\u2019s wartime meeting might be Egyptian President Anwar Sadat\u2019s 1977 visit to Israel while the two countries were technically at war \u2014 but even that was part of a larger peace process.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Iranian president\u2019s security will be provided by the US Secret Service during the UN General Assembly, according to American officials. Other Iranian representatives will be protected by the State Department\u2019s Diplomatic Security Service, the officials said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The federal security services will be backed up by members of the New York Police Department\u2019s Intelligence Bureau, along with NYPD detectives and highway patrol escorts, officials told CNN.\n <\/p>\n

\n A State Department official said the visiting Iranian delegates \u201care being admitted to the United States strictly for the purpose of representing the Islamic Republic of Iran before the United Nations\u201d and that they must \u201crestrict their activities to United Nations-related business only.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The Iranians \u201cmust seek and receive approval in advance\u201d from the State Department if they want to travel outside the vicinity of the UN headquarters, John F. Kennedy International Airport or Iran\u2019s UN mission facilities, the official added.\n <\/p>\n

\n The US has put restrictions on the Iranian delegation\u2019s movements in the past.\n <\/p>\n

\n Last year, the Trump administration announced it was blocking Iranian diplomats from accessing the \u201cwholesale club stores\u201d like Costco and purchasing luxury goods while in the US. That policy remains in place, according to the State Department spokesperson.\n <\/p>\n

\n Iranian officials visiting New York for the UN General Assembly last year were also restricted \u201cto the areas strictly necessary to transit to and from the UN headquarters district to conduct their official UN business.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n In 2019, amid tensions between the two nations, the US imposed restrictions on the visiting delegation\u2019s movements.\n <\/p>\n

\n Iran is not the only country to face obstacles over access. The Trump administration has again refused to issue a visa to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
