New York’s workplaces are getting safer \u2014 but not everywhere \u2014 according to a new report from state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.<\/p>\n
The report found workplace injuries and illnesses dropped nearly 18% over the last decade, down to about 122,000 cases in 2024.<\/p>\n
That means fewer than two out of every 100 workers got hurt or sick on the job in 2024 \u2014 better than the national average.<\/p>\n
But some industries are still seeing higher numbers.<\/p>\n
Transportation and warehousing top the list at four per 100 workers who were injured or fell ill on the job.<\/p>\n
Couriers and messengers had it worst of all, with more than seven out of every 100 who got hurt or sick on the job.<\/p>\n
DiNapoli is calling on high-risk industries to strengthen safety practices on the job, saying it could cut down on business disruptions and, more importantly, protect workers’ health and lives.<\/p>\n
\u201cNew York\u2019s private sector workplaces have become safer over the last decade,\u201d DiNapoli said in a statement. \u201cThese improvements are meaningful, considering the size of New York\u2019s workforce and the ripple effects these incidents can have on business operations and economic activity. However, some industries have a persistently high rate of injuries and illnesses.
