The initial optimism over Jaxson Dart\u2019s left knee injury faded dramatically upon further testing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Giants fear their starting quarterback is looking at potentially season-ending surgery<\/a>, a source confirmed to The Post, and in a best-case scenario, will still miss significant time. The belief Monday night, following Big Blue\u2019s ugly 28-6 loss to the Super Bowl-favorite Rams in Los Angeles, was that the franchise quarterback suffered a sprained MCL in his knee, an injury that typically sidelines a player for four to six weeks.<\/p>\n

But it appears to be much more serious than that.\u00a0`<\/p>\n

Coach John Harbaugh\u2019s first season with the Giants has taken a drastic turn. Harbaugh declined to offer many specifics on the injury in a video call with reporters Tuesday, other than to say the team has learned more about Dart\u2019s left knee and evaluations are ongoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not commenting on all the different reports. It\u2019s not my place to do that,\u201d Harbaugh said. \u201cIt\u2019s an ongoing conversation about the health of a player. In due time, everybody is going to know what the outcome is.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I don\u2019t even know all the answers, because I\u2019m not the person who is hurt, and I\u2019m not the doctor, either. I kind of know some of it. I don\u2019t know all of it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

NFL insider Tom Pelissero of Netflix reported Tuesday that Dart is getting additional medical opinions to determine if surgery is in fact needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dart, 23, limped off the field in the first quarter<\/a> following a crushing hit from both sides by Rams defenders Byron Young and Josaiah Stewart. He immediately clutched his knee and was in obvious pain. After undergoing tests, Dart emerged on the sideline in team-issued warmups. General manager Joe Schoen told ESPN on Monday Dart was \u201cgoing to be OK,\u201d and in his postgame news conference, Harbaugh said the initial prognosis was that the Giants and Dart avoided a \u201cdevastating outcome.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

That, however, doesn\u2019t seem to be the case.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is a major blow to Harbaugh and the Giants. Dart impressed as a rookie last season and excelled in a rousing Week 1 win over the Cowboys, going 23-for-29 passing for 230 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 54 yards. If he is indeed lost for the season, Dart will wind up playing just 68 snaps with star receiver Malik Nabers across two years. Nabers suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4 of 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Out of sync from the get-go, Jameis Winston struggled mightily in Dart\u2019s place<\/a>, going only 11-for-27 passing for 111 yards with an interception. The Giants will need him to play much better in Dart\u2019s absence. They could also look to add a quarterback via trade or sign one in free agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Winston \u2014 the No. 1 overall draft pick of the Buccaneers in 2015 \u2014 signed a two-year, $13 million contract extension. In three games last season for the Giants, Winston threw for 567 yards along with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He is prone to the pick, having thrown 114 interceptions across his 12-year NFL career with the Buccaneers, Saints, Browns and Giants. Jake Haener, a 2023 fourth-round pick of the Saints, is an option to serve as Winston\u2019s backup. He is currently on the practice squad after beating out Brandon Allen during training camp.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The good news is that the schedule lightens up significantly over the next few weeks. Sunday, the winless Titans come to MetLife Stadium, followed by the pedestrian Cardinals. Then, the Giants visit the Commanders, who lost starting quarterback Jayden Daniels to a dislocated left elbow Sunday. He may not be back by the time the two teams meet Oct. 11. That meeting could now be a rematch of the 2014 College Football Playoff semifinals, when Marcus Mariota and Oregon defeated Winston and Florida State.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Harbaugh attempted to put on a brave face, challenging his players through the media to respond to this harsh dose of adversity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI can tell you, if you get punched in the gut, are you going down? Are you going to crumple to the ground, as Jack Harbaugh would say, \u2018Like a sack of sour apples, just fall on the ground and just rot away and wither away into the dust?\u2019 \u201d Harbaugh said. \u201cI don\u2019t think so. How many people face gut punches every single day?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Giants are certainly dealing with a major gut punch, losing their starting quarterback just seven plays into their second game.
