<\/p>\nGetting off the train in New York City, I’m usually ready for a hearty meal before I start exploring. Fortunately, one of the best diners in New York is only a few minutes away: Skylight Diner, serving omelettes that are guaranteed to sate even the biggest appetite around. That’s just scratching the surface at this old-school diner, which has become one of my go-to spots in Midtown Manhattan since I discovered it. It has some of the longest hours of any diner in the area, which makes it a great pick with something for everyone, no matter when you arrive.<\/p>\n
Skylight Diner Is One of the Best Diners in New York, and It’s Barely Changed<\/p>\n
I was a little surprised to discover that Skylight Diner, located on 34th Street between Penn Station and the Javits Center, where some of the city’s biggest events are regularly held, had only been open since 1996. It screams old-school diner<\/a>, and not in that “theme restaurant” way. They simply did things the traditional diner way here, with neon lights outside, Formica counters, and a bustling dining room that seats hundreds and is usually packed. Still owned by father-and-son founders Teddy and George Papaioannou, the efficient diner staff juggles dozens of orders and makes sure you get your food in a reasonable time. The quality of the service is, of course, matched by the quality in the kitchen.<\/p>\n Why the Omelettes at Skylight Diner Taste Like Homemade The Skylight is busiest at breakfast, with countless people piling in to enjoy hearty portions of breakfast meats, pancakes, and more. The star attraction, though, is definitely the best omelettes in New York. Sometimes, you can tell that diner omelettes come from liquid eggs or have shortcuts taken if the place isn’t old-school. Not here. The large omelettes ($13.95 to $20.95, with hash browns and toast) come browned just right, with that trademark unevenness that indicates that you’re dealing with traditional kitchen craft, as you find at the top comfort food restaurants around the country<\/a>. You can get classic flavors like ham & cheese, but the restaurant also features some unique flavor combos that I’ve never seen before. I’m partial to the Meat Lovers (ham, bacon, and sausage), but you might enjoy the Anthony Quinn (Feta and tomato), or the Murray’s Omelette (Lox and onions).<\/p>\n What Else to Order at This New York Diner Nik’s Picks \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n The breakfast menu is available all day, as is the lunch and dinner menu. That extensive selection includes classic Greek and Italian specialties, plenty of simple fried options and burgers, and a full deli menu. All the New York restaurant classics<\/a> are here. I tend to keep it simple, either getting the roast beef au jus platter ($26.95 with potato, vegetable, and soup); or if I’m not that hungry, the corned beef sandwich ($12.75 with coleslaw and pickle). Obviously, the corned beef here has to compete with New York’s famous delis, but I was very impressed. It’s a real, marbled corned beef brisket, not processed meat, and the portion is filling without being massive. If you have room at the end, make sure to order something from the old-school dessert menu. You can get grilled pound cake topped with ice cream, or even a traditional NYC Egg Cream ($4.75).<\/p>\n What It’s Like to Eat at Skylight Diner I’ve eaten at the Skylight Diner many times, and it’s been pretty packed every time. Between the central location and the huge menu ensuring there’s something for everyone, it’s easy to see why. Fortunately, the huge dining room has two main rooms and a counter for those dining solo. You might have a wait if you come during busy times or if there’s an event in town, but the quick turnover in the dining room usually keeps it to a minimum.<\/p>\n What to Know Before You Go<\/p>\n 24-hour diners are a rarity these days, so the Skylight’s hours are close to as good as it gets. The diner is open from 6 AM to 11:30 PM, seven days a week. It is typically open 364 days a year, with the diner taking Christmas off. It accepts cash and all major credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.<\/p>\n The Skylight Diner has become a go-to spot for me every time I’m in the city, especially when I’m spending long days at an event like the annual New York Comic Con in October. The omelettes are always a star attraction, but this home-cooking restaurant in New York has such an impressive menu that I could probably come here a dozen more times and not try everything that looks good.
