At the corner of 6th Avenue and 14th Street in New York City, The Village West<\/a>, with its wedding cake architecture, looks both old and new. The 13-story mixed-use building is faced with red brick and glazed terra-cotta, a nod to pre-war design.<\/p>\n

The Village West Riffs On Greenwich Design<\/p>\n

Three stepped setbacks are softened with curved corners fitted with slim, tall rounded windows. Intriguing nooks are created by those setbacks, occupied by hidden terraces, gardens, and at the top, a rooftop balcony set with trees. Designed by BKSK Architects<\/a> and developed by IGI USA, the building with its 68 residences was completed in spring 2026.<\/p>\n

The lobby’s moodier green sets the tone.<\/p>\n

“From the beginning, IGI and CORE (the broker team) expressed a desire for the building to relate strongly to the context of Greenwich Village,” said David Kubik<\/a>, a partner at BKSK Architects, in an email. That includes riffs on the curved and turreted stylings of Greenwich buildings.<\/p>\n

Overall, The Village West architecture doesn’t much reflect the 14<\/a>th<\/a> Street commercial building look<\/a>\u2014hence the curved massing and the red brick, some laid in columns layered with extruding patterns, creating shadow and interest.<\/p>\n

The Building’s Classic Red And Green Styling<\/p>\n

Green is used throughout the building\u2014most strikingly, glazed green brick on some of the exterior. The brick was sourced from La Covadonga, a town in the Picos de Europa mountains in Northwestern Spain. Catching the sun on exterior walls, the green brick, laid in various tones, is especially eye-catching.<\/p>\n

The lobby’s statement piece is a spiral staircase line with gold railings.<\/p>\n

“Historically, you often find red brick buildings using painted green trim elements to complement the design,” Kubik said. “That classic red and green pairing felt appropriate for this building. The glazed brick green color also nicely reinforced the exterior planted areas.”<\/p>\n

He added that the green is a middle-range green (not yellowish\/not bluish), which helps tie it to historic versions as well as the surrounding landscape. The green brick is used thematically, on the ground floor and on the 7th, 12th, and 13th floors. It can be seen over the main entry, in the rear courtyard, and in the penthouse areas.<\/p>\n

The color green is pulled inside, used in public areas as well, especially notable in the lobby and the co-working lounge. There, a cool dark green with moody blue and gray undertones is used on walls: Sherwin-Williams Olympic Range<\/a> (SW 7750).<\/p>\n

The co-working lounge also uses shades of green, a color used thematically throughout the building.<\/p>\n

The lobby’s checkerboard white and black floor is a custom stone tile sourced by Karen Pearse Stone and Architectural Surfaces. Just off the lobby is a statement piece\u2014a sculptural spiral staircase done in cream with gold rails. Three cylinder lights hung on gold rods accented with small spheres drop down next to the staircase, completing the look. The lobby’s lighting was sourced from RBW, Apparatus Studio, and Allied Maker.<\/p>\n

The Village West Rose Amid New York City’s Inventory Crisis<\/p>\n

The Village West quickly sold all of its 68 units soon after completion\u2014one of numerous signs of the city’s inventory crisis, according to The Real Deal,<\/a> a real estate news platform. New York City has counted its “lowest number of new development units in over a decade,” according to a September 2026 Real Deal story.<\/p>\n
