A Bronx man was criminally charged with driving a stolen vehicle at a street takeover in Bayside and another car meetup in Queens Village about an hour later. <\/p>\n

A Bronx man was arrested after participating in a street takeover near the Bay Terrace Shopping Center<\/a> in Bayside<\/a> and a second car meetup nearly 7 miles south in Queens Village<\/a> during the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 12. <\/p>\n

Police from the 111th Precinct<\/a> responded to a 911 call just after midnight reporting multiple vehicles drag racing in the vicinity of 26th Avenue and Bell Boulevard and by the time they reached the intersection the vehicles dispersed from the location. During a canvas of a wider area, a detective from the Patrol Borough Queens North Community Response Team observed Macdiel Mejia-Avila, 22, of Victor Street in the Van Nest section of the Bronx, recklessly driving a burgundy 2020 Dodge Charger without license plates just before 1 a.m. He was taken into custody and later charged after a further investigation determined the vehicle he was driving was reported stolen.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

Mejia-Avila was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court later in the day on a complaint charging him with criminal possession of stolen property in the third and fourth degree, criminal endangerment, criminal mischief and other related crimes.<\/p>\n

According to the criminal complaint, the detective spotted the defendant driving the Charger at a high rate of speed, allowing the vehicle to drift and spin near other vehicles and pedestrians, some who needed to move out of the way to avoid being struck by Mejia-Avila. When the detectives activated his lights and sirens, Mejia-Avila continued driving into a stone wall and a parked Hyundai at the intersection of Range Street and 87th Avenue in Queens Village.<\/p>\n

The detective tracked down the owner of the Dodge Charger and determined that Mejia-Avila did not have permission to take his vehicle. The owner of the Hyundai said his vehicle had sustained damage to the front passenger and rear passenger doors in excess of $250. The property owner in Queens Village said his stone wall had sustained damage in excess of $250 as well.<\/p>\n
