The TCS New York City Marathon route has looked the same for fifteen years, but runners participating in the race this November will experience a different route just in time for its 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n
The 26.2-mile marathon creates massive diversions for the city each race day. But at Mile 20, which runs through the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx, these disturbances have become too large, leading the marathon’s organizers to change course. <\/p>\n
The section of the race in the Bronx, though only slightly over a mile long, had seven turns that were cut down to five after complaints from residents near East 140th Street.<\/p>\n
The course used run up Morris Avenue and loop around a block that is home to a supermarket and a laundromat. This meant residents of the nearly 1,800 units in the Patterson public housing complex had difficulty accessing these businesses during the race.<\/p>\n
Starting this year, after crossing the Willis Avenue Bridge, runners will make a left onto East 135th Street and then make a right on Alexander Avenue, continuing straight on Alexander Avenue. Then \u2014 instead of making a left on East 138th Street \u2014 they will turn left onto East 141st Street, before turning left on Third Avenue and then right onto East 138th Street to continue across the Madison Avenue Bridge.<\/p>\n
