{"id":355123,"date":"2026-09-23T23:30:18","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T23:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/355123\/"},"modified":"2026-09-23T23:30:18","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T23:30:18","slug":"nyc-lawmakers-want-low-traffic-neighborhoods-with-more-speed-humps-street-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/355123\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC lawmakers want &#8216;low-traffic neighborhoods&#8217; with more speed humps, street changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"sltwj\">A group of city councilmembers wants to turn areas across the five boroughs into \u201clow-traffic neighborhoods\u201d \u2014 and is pushing legislation that would mandate minor changes to the streets to discourage driving.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"6ru9a\">The bill, which is being introduced Thursday by Councilmember Shaun Abreu, the chair of the city\u2019s transportation committee, would require the city transportation department to make changes to streets in five neighborhoods \u201cwith a focus on creating low-traffic neighborhoods through directing traffic away from residential areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"2lmec\">The changes would require the city to install at least two different types of \u201ctraffic-calming devices\u201d in each neighborhood, like speed humps, medians or barriers at intersections to force drivers to slow down. Abreu says the changes, albeit small, would discourage local traffic while still allowing emergency vehicles and delivery trucks to access the streets.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"cj9bs\">\u201cIt allows any vehicle, whether it be private cars, deliveries, emergency vehicles, and sanitation, to allow access within its boundaries, but traffic simply cannot cut through,\u201d Abreu said. \u201cWe believe in this day and age, with all the collisions we&#8217;ve been seeing, especially from our cars, we think we can have safer streets with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"drs1l\">This year the city has seen a rash of fatal hit-and-run crashes, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani has pushed street redesign projects that were shelved by his predecessor. Mamdani <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/mamdani-calls-for-crackdown-on-nycs-worst-drivers-after-series-of-hit-and-run-deaths\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">released a plan earlier this month<\/a> outlining the next 20 years of the city\u2019s road safety Vision Zero program, which included vague promises to establish \u201cpedestrian-only\u201d and \u201cpedestrian-priority\u201d districts.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"f23vd\">Abreu\u2019s bill calls for mandating a few, specific design changes that go beyond the mayor\u2019s plan. He said the legislation was inspired by conversations with lawmakers in London who oversee their own \u201clow-traffic neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"3hk89\">Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal said he supports this bill, noting he\u2019s heard calls for these types of changes from community boards members in Upper Manhattan.
