One person was killed and 12 were hurt after a fire broke out<\/a> at a Bronx apartment building Wednesday morning, the FDNY said.<\/p>\n

The blaze was reported at 7:45 a.m. at the building at 1484 Montgomery Ave., near West 175th Street, in the Morris Heights section. Fire officials said it started on the fourth floor of a six-story building.<\/p>\n

The flames extended into a neighboring apartment two floors above and into the space between the ceiling and roof, according to the FDNY. It escalated to a two-alarm fire with more than 140 fire and EMS personnel responding.<\/p>\n

“Units made an aggressive interior attack, but during the course of the fire, the fire spread to an adjoining apartment,” an FDNY official said.<\/p>\n

Police said a 31-year-old man sustained burns and injuries after falling. He is in critical-but-stable condition, officers said.<\/p>\n

The firefighters said he was found unconscious after jumping from the burning building.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Five firefighters were among the injured the FDNY said.<\/p>\n

Doorbell footage from an apartment shows heavy smoke inside the hallway and large flames shooting out of the door.<\/p>\n

Kathryn Rivera said she was sleeping and her neighbor woke her up to tell her about the fire.<\/p>\n

“I just got up and got my kids and got out. I left my pets inside. One of my pets had died,” she said.<\/p>\n

Fire officials said there was significant wind because of open windows and doors, so it’s possible that helped the blaze spread more.<\/p>\n

Firefighters were able to get the flames under control just before 10 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.<\/p>\n

Tenants said they’ve filed drug activity complaints and concerns about neighbors with the building’s tenants association and the landlord.<\/p>\n

“This building has 150 open HPD violations. We know that they have a lot of egregious conditions. This is unacceptable,” City Council Committee on Housing and Buildings Chair Pierina Sanchez.<\/p>\n

CBS News New York reached out to the landlord and the property manager listed but did not hear back. A person who answered one of the numbers hung up on us.<\/p>\n

The FDNY’s Bureau of Fire Prevention issued several summonses totaling $4,000 and towed a vehicle they say was blocking a fire hydrant in front of the building.<\/p>\n

FDNY sources said they’re aware of video that was captured inside the building and said it’s under review.<\/p>\n

The Red Cross said it was helping at least 59 displaced residents. Any who need help should contact the Red Cross at 1-877-733-2767 and select option one.\u00a0<\/p>\n
