It\u2019s the world\u2019s largest folk festival. It dates to 1810. And it provides a won\u00adderful pretext to drink cold beer in large steins and wear lederhosen. (The pretzels are pretty darn good, too!) Oh, and Queens has the best Oktoberfests.<\/p>\n

Astoria: Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden on Sept. 25, 26, and 27, from 5 pm to 11 pm. Frigid Teutonic beverages, Czech and Central European food, and a joyous atmosphere will take over the massive outdoor garden during these parties at 29-19 24th Ave. Admission is free, and reservations are not accepted. Seating is first come, first served.<\/p>\n

Flushing: Oktoberfest Flushing Style at the Voelker Orth Museum on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 5:30 pm to 8 pm. The neighborhood has a German past and a Korean present. So this annual feast unites these cultures via their traditional love of the cabbage-based dishes sauerkraut and kimchi. They mix with bratwurst from the grill, japchae noodles, brews, and live music by the Shai Orchestra Ensemble. Admission is around $45, and the historic house is located at 149-19 38th Ave. (If it rains, the party moves indoors.)<\/p>\n

Astoria Again: The fun runs from Thursday, Oct. 2, to Sunday, Oct. 5, at Riverside at 33-15 Ditmars Blvd. The Astoria establishment will offer special prices on appropriate beverages (e.g., Hofbrau Okto\u00adberfest and Catskill Barkaboom) and such food items as Bratwurst, Obatzda (beer cheese dip with veg\u00adetables and pretzels), and Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes with apple sauce). Admission is free, but there\u2019s a $10 participation fee for a stein-hoisting competition on Oct. 2 at 7 pm. The winner gets a $50 Riverside gift card.<\/p>\n

Glendale: Zum Stammtisch is also getting ready for a multi-day celebration. The Glendale restaurant (69-46 Myrtle Ave.) will offer a special menu, Oktoberfest-style seating, and live music by The Spitzbaum Band from Tuesday, Oct. 6, to Friday, Oct. 9. Admission is $95 per person.<\/p>\n

The first-ever Oktoberfest was a public celebration of Bavarian Prince Ludwig\u2019s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen in Munich on Oct. 12, 1810. In this case, the party lasted until Oct. 17 and ended with a horse race. The happy couple decided to repeat the fun at the same time annually, but years later, organizers moved the dates to September because the weather is usually better and the days are longer during that month.
