The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA<\/a>) is initiating eight new bulk energy storage projects and 13 large-scale renewable energy projects in the state. Combined, these projects are expected to provide 1.7 GW of new large-scale energy resources, create more than 1,000 family-supporting jobs and generate over $3.7 billion in private investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese newly-contracted large-scale energy projects not only further the growth of clean energy and more than double the utility-scale energy storage that exists currently statewide, but they contribute to New York\u2019s comprehensive, all of the above energy strategy, said Doreen M. Harris, NYSERDA president and CEO. This will help reduce costs for New York ratepayers while continuing to improve the reliability of our state\u2019s grid.\u201d<\/p>\n

These projects were submitted to NYSERDA\u2019s Bulk Energy Storage solicitation and its 2025 Tier 1 Renewable Energy Standard solicitation. They\u2019re expected to provide over $127 million in economic activity in disadvantaged communities, as defined by the Climate Justice Working Group.<\/p>\n

Once operational, the eight contracted bulk energy storage projects will add 950 MW of new energy storage capacity. The projects represent a diverse portfolio ranging geographically from New York City and Long Island to Hudson Valley and western New York. They were selected through a process that included bid proposals from 46 projects totaling approximately 6 GW of capacity. The eight contracted projects range in duration from four to eight hours and will provide critical reliability benefits to the state\u2019s electric grid.<\/p>\n

In western New York are Lighthouse Energy Storage in Chautauqua County, Zenobe Burns in Allegany County. Eastwater Energy Storage will be in the Finger Lakes region. In Hudson Valley, KCE NY 5. For New York City, Blue Spruce Storage and Palladium storage, which will be be in Bronx County. And Holtsville and KCE NY 37 will be in Long Island .<\/p>\n

Payments under these contracts will not commence until projects have begun commercial operation, after obtaining all permits and local approvals.<\/p>\n

The contracted projects will use lithium-ion technology and, as with all NYSERDA-supported energy storage projects, are contractually required to meet the new storage safety codes that became effective Jan. 1, 2026. NYSERDA will issue the second annual Bulk Energy Storage Request for Proposals by year-end, with plans to procure 3 GW of energy storage projects over three solicitations.<\/p>\n

The 13 contracted large-scale renewable energy projects will total more than\u202f719\u202fMW of renewable capacity \u2013 enough to\u202fpower over\u202f230,000 New York homes annually once completed.<\/p>\n

The solar projects include Flint Mine Solar, Hecate Greene 1 and 2, Greens Corners Solar Park and Rich Road Solar Energy Center. All projects are expected to be placed in-service by the end of 2030 as required by the 2024 New York Public Service Commission\u2019s Energy Storage Order.<\/p>\n
