As Gothamist reported<\/a>, New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city will handle every non-anonymous heat complaint separately starting on Oct. 1.<\/p>\n Under the previous policy, the city could bundle multiple complaints from one building together, which often resulted in individual reports being closed without proper review. In April, City Limits reported<\/a> that the old system led to thousands of heat complaints being closed sans investigation.<\/p>\n Residents repeatedly brought up lack of heat during the administration’s “rental ripoff” hearings, helping push the policy change.<\/p>\n Mamdani said: “And [this change] is a result of tenants coming forward at these hearings and saying, ‘For me, one of the quickest ways to feel relief, if that is what you are interested in, is to ensure that I have heat, and that I know how to get it resolved when I don’t have heat.'”<\/p>\n More background<\/p>\n City rules require landlords to provide heat from Oct. 1 through May 31. Between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., apartments must be kept at 68 degrees if outdoor temperatures fall below 55 degrees. From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., the required indoor temperature is 62 degrees.<\/p>\n Mamdani had also promised changes to the heat-complaint system in the housing plan he released in May.<\/p>\n A report from the mayor’s office on the hearings said tenants would also be able to schedule certain building inspections and that the city would improve response times for elevator outage complaints.<\/p>\n What’s being done?<\/p>\n Inspectors “will be required to attempt an inspection for all apartments that file non-anonymous complaints,” according to the city’s report.<\/p>\n Before escalating a heat issue, the city says tenants should first try to work it out with their landlord, managing agent, or super.
