<\/p>\n May and Mercury, as history remembers, became a formidable songwriting partnership. There were occasional arguments<\/a> over guitar solos<\/a>, songs written in the bath<\/a>, and songs that possess a strange kind of magic<\/a>. Yet for Taylor, who has just released his latest solo album, Violence Insane In a Beautiful World, there were few signs of the majestic history that lay ahead of them that day.<\/p>\n \n Queen circa 1972. (Image credit: Michael Ochs Archives\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n \u201cI think we were paid \u00a350, which was an enormous amount in those days,\u201d he tells the BBC<\/a>. \u201cWe had just started Queen then, and Freddie hadn\u2019t really developed his voice, his vocal capacities, to the full.<\/p>\n \u201cHe sounded quite alarming some of the time,\u201d he recalls. \u201cHe sounded a little bit like a strangled sheep at times, with a very fast falsetto. But of course he kind of invented himself out of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n You may like<\/p>\n We didn\u2019t know what a gem we had at first.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2014 Roger Taylor<\/p>\n Mercury\u2019s strongest assets were slow to reveal themselves.<\/p>\n \u201cWe didn\u2019t realize at the time what a great musician he was,\u201d Taylor admits. \u201cA great piano player. A fantastic songwriter. We didn\u2019t know what a gem we had at first.\u201d<\/p>\n That gem, of course, was still rough around the edges at that first show in Truro City Hall.<\/p>\n Another key aspect of the band\u2019s trademark sound took shape in the local area. Roughly 10 miles northwest of Truro, the band found remarkable natural reverb in the caves at Chapel Porth beach, St. Agnes. There, they would refine their vocal harmonies.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we must have been in caves because it sounds bigger,\u201d Taylor says. \u201cThe sound rattles everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n What to read next<\/p>\n \n (Image credit: Getty Images)<\/p>\n Despite the bumpy first show, the band\u2019s potential soon became much clearer, with their self-titled album arriving three years later. It peaked at number 24 in the U.K. charts, despite May\u2019s dissatisfaction with its production.<\/p>\n Speaking to Guitar Player about the album\u2019s troubled and involuntarily rushed recording in 2021, May said they didn\u2019t have the chance to flex their muscles<\/a> until its follow-up. The record was still an important first step, though \u2014 the moment when Queen began putting paint on the proverbial canvas.<\/p>\n Queen\u2019s success wasn\u2019t forged after one humble charity gig. Mercury would go on to blossom into one of rock\u2019s most distinguished and cherished talents, though May says there was at least one occasion when he left the group speechless<\/a>.
