LONG ISLAND, New York (WABC) — Winds and waves began picking up at Jones Beach on Thursday as crews work to prepare for an expected nor’easter that could bring rain, strong winds and coastal flooding.<\/p>\n

Workers have built large protective sand mounds along the ocean beach to help shield the shoreline and nearby infrastructure from storm impacts.<\/p>\n

The dunes are intended to serve as a natural defense against erosion and flooding. Officials said the sand barriers also help protect Ocean Parkway, which runs parallel to the beaches, from potential floodwaters.<\/p>\n

Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed state agencies to prepare for the expected storm, which could bring rain, wind and coastal flooding impacts. The governor is also encouraging residents to remain vigilant, particularly those living in low-lying coastal areas.<\/p>\n

Officials warned of a risk of dangerous rip currents at beaches on Long Island and in New York City.<\/p>\n

George Gorman, regional director for the New York State Office of Parks, spoke about the preparations as state and local agencies continue monitoring conditions.<\/p>\n

Some drive-on beaches in Babylon have already been closed because of flooding. Officials said areas without standing water have also been closed because they do not want vehicles to become stuck if water quickly moves into those locations.<\/p>\n

Officials continue to urge residents to monitor conditions and heed any safety guidance as the storm approaches.<\/p>\n

Peak wind gusts Friday evening through Saturday could reach 55 mph, strong enough to potentially topple trees, bring down branches on wires and cause outages.<\/p>\n

PSEG Long Island said it has personnel ready to respond safely and as quickly as possible throughout the storm.<\/p>\n

Due to the sea conditions, Long Island Ferry<\/a> has canceled Cross Sound ferries through Saturday.<\/p>\n
