New York City is bracing for a coastal storm expected to bring strong winds, flooding and heavy rainfall through the weekend.<\/p>\n
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York City Emergency Management said they are monitoring the event.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile this storm is expected to pass offshore and keep the heaviest rain east of New York City, New Yorkers should still prepare for gusty winds, rain and coastal flooding this weekend,\u201d Mamdani said in a statement. \u201cIf you live near the coast, move your car to higher ground or away from streets that regularly flood, and secure anything outside that could be picked up by strong winds.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gov. Kathy Hochul directed state agencies to prepare for the storm and urged New Yorkers, particularly those in low-lying areas and along the shorelines, to take precautions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do not currently anticipate widespread damage from this system but hazards along our coastlines, including dangerous surf and flooding, pose a very real threat to personal safety,\u201d the governor said in a statement. \u201cWe also know how quickly coastal storms can change course, so I urge New Yorkers in the affected regions to stay vigilant, monitor local weather forecasts and be ready to act if conditions change.\u201d<\/p>\n
The National Weather Service on Thursday said the storm is likely to bring rain and gusty winds Friday evening through the weekend. Coastal and beach flooding is expected, with the greatest impacts expected Friday through Saturday.<\/p>\n
The current forecast calls for windy conditions, clouds and passing showers Saturday, with steadier rain possible Sunday. Stronger winds and minor to moderate coastal flooding are also possible over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Wind gusts as high as 45 mph and 1 to 2 inches of rain are possible.<\/p>\n
The MTA is inspecting drains in flood-prone areas and preparing crews to respond to weather-related issues, according to the governor\u2019s office. MTA Bridges and Tunnels may also restrict empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks during periods of high winds, and pedestrian walkways on bridges could be closed if necessary.<\/p>\n
