A powerful nor\u2019easter is set to slam<\/a> parts of the New York City area with coastal flooding and strong winds over the weekend, meteorologists and city officials said Thursday.<\/p>\n

The storm is expected to pound parts of eastern Long Island and the Rockaways<\/a> with high tides and wind gusts up to 60 mph starting Friday afternoon, said Accuweather senior meteorologist Dan Pydynkowski.<\/p>\n

Most of New York City, meanwhile, will be hit with heavy rain and wild wind gusts likely up to 40 or 50 mph, he said.<\/p>\n

The storm is expected to pound parts of eastern Long Island and the Rockaways with high tides and wind gusts up to 60 mph starting Friday afternoon. Stephen Yang for NY Post<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a significant September nor\u2019easter<\/a>,\u201d Pydynkowski said. \u201cIt\u2019s enough to cause concerns about power outages.\u201d<\/p>\n

The worst of the storm is expected to pass by Saturday night, with Sunday forecast to be less windy and rainy, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

New Yorkers should prepare for possible temporary blackout and rainfall up to 2 or 3 inches, Pydynkowski\u00a0 said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHave a flashlight ready and have your phone charged in case your power goes out for 12 or 18 hours,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mayor Mamdani on Thursday urged New Yorkers who live near flood-prone coastal areas to keep an eye on the weather.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile this storm is expected to pass offshore and keep the heaviest rain east of New York City, New Yorkers should still prepare for gusty winds, rain and coastal flooding this weekend,\u201d Mamdani said in a press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you live near the coast, move your car to higher ground or away from streets that regularly flood, and secure anything outside that could be picked up by strong winds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emergency\u00a0 management commissioner Christina Farrell also warned residents to secure outdoor furniture and other items to prepare for the storm.<\/p>\n

\u201cWinds will pick up late Friday, so bring in or tie down anything outside before then, and if you\u2019re traveling this weekend, allow extra time and watch for ponding on roads,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNever drive or walk through floodwater, and never go around traffic barricades. We\u2019re working with the National Weather Service and our partner agencies every day, and we\u2019ll keep New Yorkers updated,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
