{"id":356126,"date":"2026-09-24T22:18:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T22:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/356126\/"},"modified":"2026-09-24T22:18:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T22:18:08","slug":"new-york-imposes-75-tax-on-tobacco-free-nicotine-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/356126\/","title":{"rendered":"New York imposes 75% tax on tobacco-free nicotine products"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) &#8211; A new tax will make it more expensive to purchase tobacco-free nicotine products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">As of Sept. 1, New York state has imposed a 75% tax on what it calls alternative nicotine products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">These include nicotine gum, lozenges, and nicotine pouches such as Zyn and Velo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Health officials say that while these products can help smokers quit cigarettes, they may be equally addictive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt increases significantly the risk for mouth disease, mouth cancer, mouth or gum cancer, throat cancer,\u201d said Anita Seefried-Brown, project director for Alliance for Better Communities, PIVOT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Health officials hope the new tax will bring down sales of nicotine products. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WWNY.
