A fire broke out Friday morning at an elevated subway station in the Bronx, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and disrupting 2 train service.<\/p>\n
The blaze was reported shortly before 10 a.m. at the Wakefield-241st Street station along White Plains Road.<\/p>\n
Video from the scene showed firefighters battling large flames on the elevated platform.<\/p>\n
MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said the fire started in a storage area that is also used as a locker room.\u00a0The fire was extinguished by 11 a.m., he said, and there were no injuries reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you, FDNY, for your prompt response,\u201d Lieber said. \u201cThere were no injuries, although it was a highly visible conflagration.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lieber said New York City Transit\u2019s safety operation is investigating the cause of the fire.<\/p>\n
The fire suspended 2 train service between Gun Hill Road and Wakefield-241st Street, the MTA said. Commuters were advised to use the Bx39 bus as an alternative.<\/p>\n
Lieber said normal service was expected to resume soon.<\/p>\n
