{"id":356857,"date":"2026-09-25T17:12:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T17:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/356857\/"},"modified":"2026-09-25T17:12:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T17:12:13","slug":"new-york-film-festival-begins-with-james-gray-tony-gilroy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/356857\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Film Festival Begins With James Gray, Tony Gilroy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/new-york-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_new-york-film-festival_1\" data-tag=\"new-york-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Film Festival<\/a> and Rolex unveiled their new filmmakers lounge at the Lincoln Center Thursday night, where filmmakers including Paper Tiger\u2019s James Gray and Behemoth!\u2019s Tony Gilroy caught up and prepared for the frenzy of opening night Friday and the days ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHoused within the glass-walled Lincoln Ristorante, across from the Lincoln Center reflecting pool and within eyeshot of the main exhibition hall for the film festival, the lounge had been a goal for the festival and for Daniel Battsek, president of Film at Lincoln Center, who noted that he had brought it up in his interview before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/daniel-battsek-film-at-lincoln-center-president-1236184578\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">taking on the position<\/a> in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe desire was \u201cto have a room that filmmakers and colleagues from the industry can just kind of hang out, before they see a film, after they see a film,\u201d Battsek said as he raised a glass to toast the room. \u201cSo I\u2019m so happy that this has come into being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAttendees Thursday night also included directors and film teams from Tender Loving Care, Club Kid, Clarissa, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Edward Said: Between Worlds, Everytime, My Undesirable Friends: Part II \u2013 Exile, Bucking Fastard and My Wife Cried, as well as from Lincoln Center and the film festival. This is the second year Rolex has been a sponsor of the film festival, with its clock stand in the lounge, as well as loaned watches on the wrists of notable attendees. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLeading up to the event, festival organizers had been prepping for the technical feat of showing the opening night film, Paper Tiger, in 35 mm, a rarity at the New York Film Festival. Asked about the preparations, Gray, the film\u2019s director, polled his cinematographer and editor, standing nearby, who had varying degrees of confidence in the ability to show in 35 mm (festival organizers definitively said it would happen). O\u2019Toole<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile claiming he was filled with \u201cstress and terror\u201d about the opening night screening, after having the film premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/neon-oscars-paper-tiger-awards-categories-james-gray-1236706637\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">received strong reviews<\/a>, and show at Locarno Film Festival in August, Gray also noted his pride at having a film as part of the New York Film Festival, having grown up in Queens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m from about nine miles that way, and I never thought I\u2019d make a film that would show at the Lincoln Center,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAsked about his motivation in making the crime-thriller, starring Miles Teller, Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, Gray said there\u2019s part of his own story in the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cYou can\u2019t put your finger on what it is about a story that moves you. But it\u2019s very autobiographical,\u201d he said, adding that much is drawn from his teenage years, in particular. \u201cI never have a goal about a festival.
