In a Facebook post, <\/a>they say registered athletes will receive a separate communication outlining their options, including details regarding the possibility of a rescheduled event.<\/p>\n IronMan officials say they will also be closing the athlete race village at Jones Beach Field 5, Zach\u2019s Bay, including athlete registration and the IronMan store. <\/p>\n Original story below. <\/p>\n A powerful nor’easter slated to hit the region this weekend is already disrupting local events, forcing cancellations and sending organizers scrambling for contingency plans as residents keep a close eye on the forecast.<\/p>\n Athletes preparing for major endurance competitions face mixed updates. While the Hamptons Marathon has been officially canceled<\/a> due to severe weather concerns, the Ironman Triathlon at Jones Beach is still moving forward<\/a>. <\/p>\n Nearly 4,000 athletes are expected to take part in this year\u2019s Ironman triathlon on Saturday, but an approaching nor\u2019easter could impact race conditions.<\/p>\n Athletes picking up their race bibs Thursday said they remain confident the event will go on, despite the uncertain forecast.<\/p>\n Umair Sheikh, of Brooklyn, has spent the past year training for the race. He said difficult weather is part of the challenge.<\/p>\n \u201cI’ve done tons of endurance races, lots of fun. I don’t care about some rain, I don’t care about some wind, rain or shine I am going to be racing this weekend,\u201d Sheikh said.<\/p>\n New York State Parks officials say a contingency plan is in place if weather conditions become a concern. The plan is still being amended.<\/p>\n George Gorman, regional director for New York State Parks on Long Island, said officials will meet with Ironman representatives Saturday. <\/p>\n Southampton Village police announced on Facebook that the Hamptons Marathon this weekend will be canceled because of the nor\u2019easter.<\/p>\n The announcement comes days after uncertainty about whether the storm would impact the marathon. The Facebook post says predicted high winds and heavy rains could impact the course.<\/p>\n Other seasonal events across the island are adjusting operations to accommodate the incoming storm. <\/p>\n
