Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency for Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Salem counties, effective at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.<\/p>\n<p>Starting Friday night, the storm is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain, significant coastal flooding, and beach erosion, with those eight counties facing the greatest risk, Sherrill said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge all New Jerseyans to take this storm seriously, stay alert, and follow local guidance,&#8221; the governor said. &#8220;We\u2019re prepared and will keep you updated as conditions develop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Across the Hudson, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for the Bronx, Brooklyn, Nassau, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Suffolk, and Westchester counties on Friday. The storm began impacting New York Friday morning and is expected to last through Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The worst impacts are expected from Friday night through Sunday morning, particularly in shoreline and low-lying communities on Long Island, New York City, and the lower Mid-Hudson, according to Hochul&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>Coastal flooding is a primary concern in New York, particularly during high tide, with the worst flooding expected along Long Island&#8217;s South Shore and parts of lower New York Harbor, the Bronx, Westchester, and northern Nassau County along Long Island Sound.<\/p>\n<p>Waves could reach 4 to 7 feet along Long Island Sound, 7 to 15 feet on western Long Island, and 15 to 22 feet on eastern Long Island. Officials urged people to avoid beaches, boating, and other water activities.<\/p>\n<p>Wind gusts could reach 60 mph, potentially bringing down trees and power lines. More than 5,600 workers are available statewide in New York for response, restoration, and repairs.<\/p>\n<p>The storm is expected to bring a widespread 1.5 to 3 inches of rain in New York, with 3 to 5 inches possible on eastern Long Island. Isolated flash flooding is also possible there.<\/p>\n<p>The MTA will ban empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks from its bridges and tunnels beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, through 2 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, due to high winds.
