{"id":357498,"date":"2026-09-26T09:48:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-26T09:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/357498\/"},"modified":"2026-09-26T09:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-26T09:48:10","slug":"new-york-man-arrested-at-dulles-after-bringing-65-pounds-of-khat-in-baggage-wtop-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/357498\/","title":{"rendered":"New York man arrested at Dulles after bringing 65 pounds of khat in baggage \u2013 WTOP News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A New York man is facing felony drug charges after customs officers said they found a large amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/factsheets\/khat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">khat <\/a>in the passenger\u2019s luggage at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Customs and Border Protection said 24-year-old Bakari Wally, of the Bronx, was arrested Thursday after 65 pounds of khat were found in his luggage. It has a street value of around $8,000, a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wally had just come from Casablanca, Morocco, on Wednesday night, when officers found bags of \u201cdried organic substance\u201d in his checked baggage. They referred him to a secondary examination, and a field test was done, which identified the substance as khat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officers seized the khat, and Wally was turned over to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wally was charged with possession with the intent to distribute and transporting a controlled substance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Customs said that there has been an increase in khat, which has amphetaminelike effect, smuggled in baggage.
