NEW YORK (WABC) — A powerful nor’easter is battering the Tri-State area on an AccuWeather Alert Day, bringing a prolonged stretch of heavy rain, damaging winds and significant coastal flooding concerns through the weekend.<\/p>\n

Strong wind gusts have already topped 40 mph in parts of the region, with higher gusts reported across Long Island and coastal communities. Forecasters say the strongest winds have yet to arrive, with gusts expected to increase throughout the day. Along the coast, wind speeds of 50 to 60 mph are likely, while the eastern end of Long Island could experience particularly dangerous gusts of 60 to 70 mph overnight into Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

The combination of saturated ground and intense winds raises the threat of downed trees and power outages. Residents are being urged to secure outdoor furniture and loose objects as blustery conditions continue through Sunday before gradually easing later in the day and into Monday. Wind advisories remain in effect across much of the area, while high wind warnings have been issued for some coastal communities, including parts of Monmouth and Ocean counties.<\/p>\n

Coastal flooding is also a major concern as persistent onshore winds push water toward the shoreline. Coastal flood warnings are in effect along much of the coast, with inundation of 2 to 3 feet possible during high tide cycles. The threat is being amplified by the recent full moon, which is contributing to higher-than-normal tidal levels and increasing the potential for more significant flooding impacts.<\/p>\n

Rainfall will continue in waves as the storm slowly moves through the region. While there may be occasional breaks in the precipitation during the day, forecasters caution that the storm is far from over. Bands of heavy rain will continue to rotate into the area through Sunday and into Monday.<\/p>\n

The greatest risk for localized flooding is expected overnight into Sunday morning, when another surge of deep tropical moisture is forecast to move in. Heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas, adding to the ongoing coastal flooding concerns.<\/p>\n

Storm rainfall totals are expected to be substantial. Long Island and the Jersey Shore could see 4 to 6 inches of rain by the time the storm wraps up. New York City and much of the lower Hudson Valley are forecast to receive 2 to 4 inches, while areas farther north and west may see 1 to 2 inches. Those amounts will be enough to create additional flooding concerns through the weekend.<\/p>\n

The nor’easter will continue to impact the region through Monday, with periods of rain, gusty winds and flooding concerns remaining in place. Conditions are expected to gradually improve Monday before the storm finally exits on Tuesday, paving the way for a return to sunshine and temperatures in the 70s.<\/p>\n
