STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The following are key takeaways from this week\u2019s Community Board 3 meeting, which took place at the the CYO-MIV Community Center, Pleasant Plains.<\/p>\n
These points represent some of the updates and discussions from both the public session and committee reports.<\/p>\n
Proposed group home<\/p>\n
The board unanimously approved a proposed new seven-resident group home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities at 178 North Railroad Ave. in Annadale.<\/p>\n
Several parents and caregivers delivered emotional testimony about the urgent lack of services for adults with autism and developmental disabilities on Staten Island.<\/p>\n
Speakers highlighted shortages in day programs, residential placements and long-term care options, arguing that many families are struggling to find support as parents age and their children become adults.<\/p>\n
Residents and board members who live near existing group homes said the facilities are good neighbors and help fill a critical community need.<\/p>\n
Starbucks expansion <\/p>\n
The board voted to support plans to expand the drive-thru operation at the Starbucks at 5801 Amboy Rd. in Prince\u2019s Bay.<\/p>\n
Supporters argued the expansion could help alleviate traffic congestion caused by lengthy drive-thru lines that currently spill onto nearby roadways.<\/p>\n
Truck traffic<\/p>\n
Councilmember Frank Morano, a Republican representing Staten Island\u2019s South Shore, promoted proposed legislation that would create \u201cfreight impact zones\u201d and allow Community Boards to formally request city action when truck traffic stemming from ports, warehouses and freight facilities creates neighborhood problems.<\/p>\n
Public safety concerns <\/p>\n
NYPD representatives urged residents to lock vehicles and remain vigilant against increasingly sophisticated phone and AI-enabled scams.<\/p>\n
