Kathy Hochul declared a State Disaster Emergency Friday for all five boroughs in New York City, as well as Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties as the storm moved into the region. The emergency declaration took effect Sept. 25 and is authorized to remain in place through Oct. 25, allowing the state to continue response and recovery efforts after the storm passes. Officials warned of heavy rain, strong winds, coastal flooding, potential power outages and travel disruptions.

New York City Emergency Management had already issued a travel advisory through Sunday morning, warning residents to prepare for wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph and several inches of rain. Coastal Flood Warnings were issued for Brooklyn and southern Queens, where officials warned that vulnerable roads and properties could see moderate flooding.

The storm has also wiped out several of the city’s biggest live music events.

All Things Go canceled the entire three-day New York edition of its festival at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, which was scheduled for Sept. 25 through 27. Organizers cited severe weather conditions and high winds after consulting with local officials, the venue and weather advisers. The lineup included Zara Larsson, Lola Young, MUNA, Ethel Cain and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Global Citizen Festival was also called off ahead of its scheduled Saturday return to Central Park’s Great Lawn. The cancellation is particularly notable because it is the first in the festival’s 14-year history.

“Safety has to come first,” Global Citizen said in its announcement, explaining that weather conditions made it unsafe to bring tens of thousands of attendees, performers, employees and equipment onto the Great Lawn. Organizers said they had spent the week considering alternate plans before determining none were feasible.

The festival was scheduled to feature Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey, Victoria Monét and TOMORROW X TOGETHER.

The cancellations extended beyond those two events. CBGB Festival, scheduled to take place under the K Bridge in Brooklyn, also scrapped its weekend programming, which was set to include Morrissey, Patti Smith, Interpol and Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter.

Storm impacts have varied considerably across the five boroughs. Some areas have experienced primarily rain and strong winds, while coastal neighborhoods have seen substantially more flooding. Flooding was reported Saturday morning around Coney Island, with sanitation trucks seen pushing through standing water along Neptune Avenue. In Queens, viral footage showed two people kayaking through flooded streets toward a train station, while parts of Howard Beach were also inundated as water covered portions of 159th Road.

The storm is expected to continue affecting the region through Sunday.

This story was originally published by Men’s Journal on Sep 26, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
