Why are tomatoes still pricey even at the height of harvest season?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q5VQB4RQKBAXZGQQXA3QVNEVJY\">Don\u2019t blame the farmer or shoot the messenger. The answer, according to trucking executives, grocers and distributors, lies in costs that accumulate long before a product reaches a supermarket shelf or restaurant kitchen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EWFTUQMJHBB33PIBM2J53RAGFE\">In midsummer, Zach Miller, vice president of the Trucking Association of New York, gave New York City Council members a presentation called \u201cTrucking 101,\u201d arguing that <a href=\"https:\/\/nytrucks.org\/resources\/fast-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/nytrucks.org\/resources\/fast-facts\">transportation costs<\/a> are among the least visible drivers of prices across New York.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Trucking in New York\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/VA5HLKUSCRBMNOKAOZQPUFRWE4.png\"  \/>A slide from the Trucking Association of New York&#8217;s &#8220;Trucking 101&#8221; presentation highlights the layers of truck inspections and enforcement that carriers face in New York.(Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P7KDVBPD3NGQTCIK2OZYPBQKUQ\">\u201cEverything that they see will have come from a truck,\u201d Miller told Advance\/SILive.com, noting that an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/html\/motorist\/deliveries.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/html\/motorist\/deliveries.shtml\">estimated 90%<\/a> of goods and services in New York arrive by truck. \u201cIf something has an impact on the industry, it\u2019s going to have an impact on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JCPTCXPM2RF25DYYELKMXJX5TU\">As voters head to the polls this November, debates over taxes and the cost of doing business continue to shape conversations across the food industry. Businesses throughout the food supply chain absorb those costs, which ultimately are reflected in the prices consumers pay at restaurants, supermarkets and neighborhood bodegas.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ranchers\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/H64M2VPPI5CRHHBQEIAL2LWC6I.jpeg\"  \/>Commercial trucks carry an estimated 90% of goods and services moved throughout New York, according to the Trucking Association of New York.  (Staten Island Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)(Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IWZOUJ44BFF6HGFLQMX3YF52DY\">\u201cI would say it\u2019s the silent cost,\u201d Miller said. \u201cThe silent cost about why food is so much more expensive in New York is because of the added costs on the trucking industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PO4UHN6L2VAN3LT3Q26CVHMGAY\">Tom Beyar, owner of Beyar\u2019s Market in Willowbrook, said the food itself isn\u2019t the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NVTYR4HBPNFQJJIHRTQTAXTB2Q\">\u201cIt\u2019s not the price for me,\u201d Beyar said. \u201cThe prices aren\u2019t that bad. It\u2019s all the factors that drive up those prices to what they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ranchers\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/A6VCEZACRBDCPG2NU2G7CWEEFA.jpeg\"  \/>Fuel costs remain a major expense for trucking companies, distributors and food suppliers, who say increases ripple throughout the supply chain. (Staten Island Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)(Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)Hidden costs on the road<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CG3MRQXDHNGYXKJ5Y76YWRSRKA\">John Tesoriero of Ranchers Best in Mariners Harbor pointed to several New York-specific expenses, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.ny.gov\/bus\/hut\/huidx.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tax.ny.gov\/bus\/hut\/huidx.htm\">Highway Use Tax, or HUT.<\/a> New York is one of only five states that charges the mileage-based tax, which trucking companies operating in the state must pay but competitors in most other states do not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DOFSUN2P3BABVG23J3QCJY5AOE\">Another hyperlocal cost is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dep\/environment\/idling-citizens-air-complaint-program.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/dep\/environment\/idling-citizens-air-complaint-program.page\">New York City\u2019s Citizens Air Complaint Program<\/a>. Residents can report allegedly idling trucks by submitting video evidence to the Department of Environmental Protection. When a violation leads to a settlement or conviction, the complainant is eligible for 25% of the penalty collected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4N5U2DS3FJERZFSWDFEUPVRQNE\">Commercial truck insurance in New York is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.logrock.com\/commercial-truck-insurance\/auto-insurance-requirements-by-state-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.logrock.com\/commercial-truck-insurance\/auto-insurance-requirements-by-state-2026\/\">generally more expensive<\/a> than in many other states, a cost insurers attribute in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/08\/nyc-congestion-pricing-study-finds-increased-staten-island-traffic-little-pollution-impact.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/08\/nyc-congestion-pricing-study-finds-increased-staten-island-traffic-little-pollution-impact.html\"> part to congestion<\/a>, claim severity and operating conditions, particularly in the New York City region. Trucking companies also cite rising insurance premiums and <a href=\"https:\/\/truckingresearch.org\/about-atri\/atri-research\/operational-costs-of-trucking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/truckingresearch.org\/about-atri\/atri-research\/operational-costs-of-trucking\/\">other operating expenses<\/a> as contributors to higher transportation rates, costs that are ultimately passed along through the supply chain and borne by consumers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TQVEKAC7IVGTXKX4F22OGZXCWE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/08\/bp-fossella-slams-nonsense-in-nyc-congestion-pricing-study-as-traffic-rises-on-staten-island.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/08\/bp-fossella-slams-nonsense-in-nyc-congestion-pricing-study-as-traffic-rises-on-staten-island.html\">Congestion pricing<\/a> presents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/fares-tolls\/tolls\/congestion-relief-zone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/fares-tolls\/tolls\/congestion-relief-zone\">another challenge<\/a>, Miller said, because<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/fares-tolls\/tolls\/congestion-relief-zone\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/fares-tolls\/tolls\/congestion-relief-zone\/about\"> trucks are charged<\/a> per entry rather than once per day. (Staten Island Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)(Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)How trucking costs reach the checkout counter<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"74X4GAVYR5D3RJC4TDMXQIWKKI\">Miller said the trucking industry operates on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americantruckersllc.com\/blog\/owner-operator-profit-margins-2026.html?srsltid=AU7gw4VOEXk6Y_jhiYTi7vBMRNshBR0IrrM1Th_OWUZdqs9IRKNg_sSj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.americantruckersllc.com\/blog\/owner-operator-profit-margins-2026.html?srsltid=AU7gw4VOEXk6Y_jhiYTi7vBMRNshBR0IrrM1Th_OWUZdqs9IRKNg_sSj\">thin profit margins<\/a>, typically between 1.5% and 3.5%. Most trucking companies are small and midsize businesses with little ability to absorb mounting expenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TGW7VIBJJRD2VCGB52AZVHLUIU\">\u201cThese costs make their way through the supply chain to that end user,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s just no capacity to absorb all of these costs. So they have to be passed along to that end user.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N4E5RW2IC5CUFKQWUGKUIZBX2Y\">The challenge, Miller said, is getting New Yorkers to recognize the connection between policies affecting trucks and their own household budgets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QKJATFIUBVDABLKFR3WYP2PCJM\">\u201cWhen you hear of a proposal that is going to add costs to the trucking industry, don\u2019t just dismiss that as, \u2018Oh well, it\u2019s the cost of doing business,\u2019\u201d Miller said. \u201cActually think through what that impact is going to be to your household budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Beyar's\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/5UT7TZ3JPJAIHE4DI2ENPHUGMI.jpeg\"  \/>A breakfast sandwich at Beyar&#8217;s Market in Willowbrook. (Staten Island Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZDPTOTCE4VBFZMMWXKRCUDXT6U\">Back at Beyar\u2019s Market, Tom Beyar noted other costs incurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W4KUSFSQDNEP3FGTK5BR62JP7E\">\u201cIt\u2019s everything behind the scenes,\u201d Beyar said. \u201cIt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/08\/ny-has-the-third-highest-electrical-bills-nationally-but-no-one-can-agree-why-report-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/2026\/08\/ny-has-the-third-highest-electrical-bills-nationally-but-no-one-can-agree-why-report-says.html\">utilities, Con Edison,<\/a> regulations, insurance, trucking, gas and labor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3BSRBBAZTVB7HK4RBWAOXOG6HM\">Insurance costs alone have soared, he said, adding, \u201cIn the last three years, it\u2019s five times what it was three years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7QZVJFT4VZF7ZFTLRDSGDQ23IM\">He said transportation surcharges, traffic and delivery delays also add costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CQMQQYTIXFE3RP6ICRDP3CRTVI\">\u201cThey don\u2019t want to come into New York because if they\u2019re here long enough to get timed out, they lose the whole next day,\u201d Beyar said.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"San Gennaro Festival\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IJRU7U3LZVCNDHHSMXS3UYFJBA.jpg\"  \/>Crowds fill Mulberry Street during the Feast of San Gennaro in Manhattan. (Staten Island Advance\/SILive.com | Pamela Silvestri)Staff-ShotDelivering to Manhattan<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EGOW3VGZ7BCKXMO3OWNAOY3FOU\">Delivering to Manhattan has become increasingly difficult, Tesoriero said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LM7UQ6CS3JEA3ECVYTEDWTYII4\">\u201cRight now, I have one truck that goes to Manhattan,\u201d he said. \u201cIt leaves my facility at 3:30 in the morning, and it\u2019s out of Manhattan by 9:30.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZWGQYS4C6NGWTDOMBM6CWHGABA\">Even with two workers aboard a truck, he said, finding a place to park and unload in Manhattan can be nearly impossible. It affects nearly every stage of producing and distributing food, from the machinery that harvests crops to the electricity that powers facilities and the trucks that move goods to market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CV2QQPFNLZG2HCMON4JFGC2E64\">\u201cFuel drives everything,\u201d he said. \u201cIt takes fuel to operate machinery, it takes fuel for electricity, it takes fuel for transportation. Somehow, some way, it impacts so many things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PYGMRS44XRBDLOGBSQD6JZRQBA\">The ripple effects extend beyond transportation, he explained. As fuel costs rise, workers face higher commuting expenses and often seek higher wages, while manufacturers, distributors and trucking companies contend with steeper operating costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"36RFFDY3XNE3DK2NOFBCFQ6S54\">\u201cNow it\u2019s costing more money to deliver, it\u2019s costing more money to run the plant and it\u2019s costing more money in labor,\u201d Tesoriero said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q6ZOCYDJW5ASNCMOQU2BJYTR2Q\">Those costs leave little room for businesses to absorb expenses on their own, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WWRQFGAO45FPHCJKXI2RCF55BU\">\u201cI\u2019m not a genius,\u201d Tesoriero said. \u201cIf it\u2019s costing more money, you have to charge more money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MFLKYHEKZJEGDBOQBA7CSACISY\">In the end, he said, the costs land with the customer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T25NTIGKK5GJBETQWXP5EGEC5Y\">\u201cThe last person in the chain is the person who actually consumes the food,\u201d Tesoriero said. \u201cThat\u2019s the person who gets hit with it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y \u2014 Why is a steak so expensive in New York?
