{"id":358403,"date":"2026-09-27T23:24:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T23:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/358403\/"},"modified":"2026-09-27T23:24:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T23:24:09","slug":"noreaster-pummels-nyc-with-rain-wind-and-flooding-more-rain-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/358403\/","title":{"rendered":"Nor\u2019easter pummels NYC with rain, wind and flooding; more rain Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/news\/more-rain-wind-new-york-city-mamdani-travel-advisory-nor-easter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">nor\u2019easter pummeled NYC<\/a> this weekend, marked by isolated floods, strong winds and thousands of New Yorkers left without power on Sunday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, more rain is in the forecast through Monday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a high-impact stretch for the New York City area, with heavy rain and strong winds coinciding with one another,\u201d AccuWeather meteorologist Alyssa Glenny said. \u201cIn a densely populated area, it doesn\u2019t take long for flooded roads, poor visibility and downed trees to create major travel problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 3,000 New Yorkers were left without power as of 9 a.m. on Sept. 27, according to the NYC Emergency Management office (NYCEM). Most of those outages were in Staten Island\u2019s South Shore neighborhoods. Power was restored in most areas by the afternoon, though there were still pockets of outages across the city, including in Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/outagemap.coned.com\/external\/default.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ConEd<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>1.68 inches of rain from the weekend storm fell onto Central Park by Sunday afternoon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/live-updates\/new-york-new-jersey-weather-noreaster-september-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CBS News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>A coastal flood warning is in effect for the city through 12 p.m. on Sept. 28, according to the National Weather Service. A previous coastal flood warning was in effect through 6 p.m. on Sunday.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Strong winds nearing an alarming 55 mph hit parts of the city. As of Sunday morning, emergency management received 500 reports of downed trees.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>The storm turned deadly in East New York on Saturday when part of a tree fell and struck and killed a 56-year-old man. <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/post\/brooklyn-falling-tree-kills-56-year-old-man-east-new-york-parking-lot-police-sources-say\/19877365\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Leighton Brown<\/a>, an employee at the Cypress Hills Houses, was walking near the tree when the tragic incident occurred.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted condolences on social media on Saturday.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy thoughts are with his entire family as they deal with this unimaginable loss,\u201d the mayor wrote. \u201cMay he rest in peace, and may his service to our city never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isolated flooding occurred in parts of the city, including flooding on Saturday near a train station in Howard Beach. Arthur Kill Road on Staten Island also experienced flooding.\n<\/p>\n<p>Outside of the metro area, the storm has already caused coastal flooding in New Jersey and flooded roads in Norfolk, Virginia, Bethany Beach, Delaware and along the Outer Banks.\n<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s forecast<\/p>\n<p>The storm will lose wind intensity Sunday, but rain and repeated rounds of tidal flooding and beach erosion could continue before the system finally pulls away Monday night, according to AccuWeather.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coastal flooding will remain a concern throughout Sunday, with strong winds expected to weaken as the day continues.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>Monday in NYC is expected to be cool, wet and gray, with a high temperature of 61 and a low of 59 degrees.
