at the grimy subway stop that takes you directly in front of the Beaux Arts building (which took 29 years to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycurbanism.com\/blog\/2019\/9\/13\/brooklyn-museum-construction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">finally complete in 1926<\/a>) are intentionally placed relics of another kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the station is an underground mini-museum of salvaged relics\u2014from corbels to rosettes to human faces with eyes that follow you as you move toward the platform\u2014taken out of the rubble of demolished New York City buildings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ephemeralnewyork.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/brooklynmuseumrelicssubwaygrotesque.jpeg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" walls with the care and precision of the mounted paintings inside the Museum\u2019s halls and rooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">What are they doing here, besides giving of ornamental architecture, and they were donated as part of the MTA\u2019s Arts and Design program, which brings art installations to city subway stations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNew mosaic designs were added to frame the objects and make connections with the architecture of the station,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mta.info\/agency\/arts-design\/collection\/new-york-city-architectural-artifacts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">states the MTA<\/a> on a web page explaining the href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/2758\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">provides a bit more context<\/a>, stating that this \u201clong-term installation\u201d got its start in 2004 and was apparently planned to run through 2020, but the relics remain in what seems to be a permanent exhibit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The MTA also explains that the Brooklyn Museum \u201chas long served as a repository for ornamental architectural forms salvaged from significant buildings that were being demolished.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a
