In Hamilton Beach, steady and sometimes heavy rain Sunday flooded parts of the neighborhood. Red cones were placed along 164th Avenue near 104th Street to warn drivers away from areas where vehicles could become stuck.<\/p>\n
Many residents said they prepared ahead of the storm because of the neighborhood\u2019s history of flooding.<\/p>\n

\u201cI moved my car, this one car, all the way up the block, cause we went through Sandy down here and we know what high tides are like,\u201d Hamilton Beach resident Laura Werner said.<\/p>\n
The Choudry family, which has lived in Hamilton Beach for two years, was not as fortunate. Several inches of water entered the basement of their home on Davenport Court after their water pump stopped working.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe intensity of the water was so much that our pump, the water pump stopped working and the water started flooding in,\u201d resident Waasif Choudry said. \u201cThere was about eight inches of water.\u201d<\/p>\n
Firefighters with the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department said many residents appeared well prepared for the storm and that they did not have to conduct many water rescues.<\/p>\n
Downed trees across NYC<\/p>\n
The storm\u2019s winds also caused widespread damage across the city.<\/p>\n
NYC Emergency Management said late Sunday that crews were working through more than 1,008 reports of downed trees across the five boroughs. NYC Parks crews were working 12-hour shifts for a fourth straight day as part of the city\u2019s Downed Tree Task Force.<\/p>\n
At least one person was killed by a falling tree in Brooklyn<\/a>.<\/p>\n Leighton Brown, 56, a longtime maintenance worker for the New York City Housing Authority, was walking through a parking lot at the Cypress Hills Houses in East New York on Saturday when a large tree fell and struck him.<\/p>\n NYCHA said in a statement that it was \u201cdeeply saddened by this tragic loss\u201d and extended its condolences to Brown\u2019s family and the NYCHA community.<\/p>\n Elsewhere in Brooklyn, four people, including two children, were injured Saturday afternoon when a tree branch fell at Kelly Park Playground in Homecrest.<\/p>\n Police said a 7-year-old girl suffered a broken arm, while a 1-year-old boy suffered a cut to his cheek. Two women, ages 40 and 41, suffered injuries to their head and wrist. All four were taken to a hospital in stable condition.<\/p>\n The storm also caused power outages and transportation disruptions across the city.<\/p>\n At one point Sunday morning, about 2,500 customers were without power, NYC Emergency Management said<\/a>. The storm also produced wind gusts of up to 45 mph citywide Saturday and up to 55 mph at John F. Kennedy International Airport<\/a>.<\/p>\n The strong winds prompted restrictions on some trucks on MTA bridges and tunnels, while motorists were urged to use caution on several bridges.<\/p>\n The nor\u2019easter was expected to weaken Monday, but showers and minor impacts were expected to continue.<\/p>\n NYC Emergency Management said coastal flood advisories remained in effect for Monday morning\u2019s high tide, with 1 to 1.5 feet of water possible above ground in coastal areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n City officials said the Downed Tree Task Force would remain active Monday, while FDNY maintained an enhanced posture in the Rockaways and Howard Beach.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Bk_Tree_Falls_Kills_NYCHA_Employee_092626_VO_138278410_388.jpeg\")
