{"id":358979,"date":"2026-09-28T17:30:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T17:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/358979\/"},"modified":"2026-09-28T17:30:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T17:30:09","slug":"borough-presidents-list-of-ten-brooklyn-defining-book-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/358979\/","title":{"rendered":"Borough President&#8217;s List of Ten Brooklyn-Defining Book Titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The reading list offers a literary snapshot of Brooklyn\u2019s history, communities and changing identity after this year\u2019s Brooklyn Book Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Brooklyn Borough Historian Asad Dandia released a list of 10 books exploring the communities, histories and identities that have shaped Brooklyn, with the selections featured prominently during this year\u2019s Brooklyn Book Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 Brooklyn Book List was released Sept. 25, ahead of the festival\u2019s main Festival Day and Literary Marketplace on Sept. 27 at Brooklyn Borough Hall and surrounding venues. Despite rain causing the cancelation of the marketplace, book talks and festivities continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The list brings together fiction and nonfiction spanning different periods and perspectives on the borough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has never been one singular Brooklyn\u2014this borough is thousands of stories, woven into every block, every neighborhood, every small business and park and house of worship,&#8221; said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.\u00a0\u201cI&#8217;m grateful to Borough Historian Asad Dandia for helping curate a list that captures Brooklyn in all its complexity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"55550601399_c3084d2d20_o\" id=\"file-4516174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/55550601399_c3084d2d20_o.jpg;w=960.jpeg\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nPhoto: Supplied\/ Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The selections include Betty Smith\u2019s &#8220;A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,&#8221;\u00a0Thomas J. Campanella\u2019s &#8220;Brooklyn: The Once and Future City,&#8221; Prithi Kanakamedala\u2019s &#8220;Brooklynites,&#8221;\u00a0Hugh Ryan\u2019s &#8220;When Brooklyn Was Queer&#8221;\u00a0and Xochitl Gonzalez\u2019s &#8220;Last Night in Brooklyn,&#8221; which is set in Fort Greene and explores a changing Brooklyn through the experience of its residents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other selections examine Black communities and the history of race in Brooklyn, Hasidic culture, Arab American experiences, gentrification and the development of Brownstone Brooklyn.
