{"id":359027,"date":"2026-09-28T18:18:23","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T18:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/359027\/"},"modified":"2026-09-28T18:18:23","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T18:18:23","slug":"new-map-shows-how-key-midterm-states-hit-by-us-canada-trade-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/359027\/","title":{"rendered":"New map shows how key midterm states hit by US-Canada trade war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 The raging <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/12\/us-news\/canada-trade-war-jeopardizing-senate-battleground-states-for-gop-experts-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">trade war between the US and Canada<\/a> is hitting home in states hosting some of the 2026 cycle\u2019s most competitive Senate contests, according to an analysis obtained by The Post. <\/p>\n<p>Iowa, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio and Texas executed a combined $188 billion in commerce with Canada \u2014 more than a quarter of the $674 billion in annual trade between the two countries \u2014 over the 12 months ending in June 2026, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/22\/us-news\/heritage-ousts-two-staffers-as-more-scholars-flee-to-mike-pences-group-brain-drain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Advancing American Freedom Foundation<\/a>, a conservative group founded by former Vice President Mike Pence. <\/p>\n<p>President Trump has long feuded with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>In addition, AAF found that Iowa (29%), Maine (62%), Michigan (29%), Minnesota (30%), Ohio (23%) and New Hampshire (16%) relied on Canada for a double-digit percentage of their annual trade in goods over the same period. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/08\/business\/canadas-retaliatory-tariffs-take-effect-as-us-trade-talks-stall\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Canadian government slapped retaliatory tariffs<\/a> ranging from 15% to 50% on more than $20 billion worth of American goods, including steel, aluminum, wool, lumber, milk, T-shirts and air conditioners. Trump responded by barring Canadian products from federal contracts.<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 22, the US had imposed 50% duties on an estimated $28 billion of Canadian goods \u2014 including beer, cheese, and electronics.<\/p>\n<p>AAF\u2019s analysis reveals that many battleground Senate states are being impacted by tariffs. AFF<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA trade war with Canada will negatively impact many states, especially those heavily engaging in trade with Canada, including energy- and mineral-rich states, many heavy-industry dependent states, and our agricultural heartlands,\u201d said AAF, which has distributed the analysis to lawmakers on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats such as Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan have drawn attention to the trade war with Canada. Scott Applewhite<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are defending Senate seats in Iowa, Maine, Ohio and Texas and trying to flip Minnesota and New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
