{"id":359413,"date":"2026-09-29T02:02:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T02:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/359413\/"},"modified":"2026-09-29T02:02:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T02:02:10","slug":"fresh-proof-that-new-yorks-leaders-are-betraying-our-schoolchildren","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/359413\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh proof that New York&#8217;s leaders are betraying our schoolchildren"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CUNY graduation rates are falling fast \u2014 the fruit of the state Board of Regents\u2019 war on standards with the city Department of Education\u2019s eager cooperation. <\/p>\n<p>Across CUNY, graduation rates <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/27\/us-news\/cuny-graduation-rates-plummet-in-5-year-slide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plunged about a tenth<\/a> these last five years, a drop from 62% in 2022 to 55.6% this past academic year at four-year colleges and from 38.9% to 35.5% at two-year schools.<\/p>\n<p>CUNY\u2019s much-admired three-year undergrad degree, the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs, saw grad rates collapse from 44% to 34.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Since CUNY students are overwhelming the product of New York City public schools, this is clear evidence the Department of Education, after eight years of failed leadership under Mayor Bill de Blasio followed by prolonged COVID school closures thanks to the United Federation of Teachers, has been  failing to prepare its graduates for college.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-Gov. George Pataki is right to also blame the Regents-run State Education Department and Gov. Kathy Hochul\u2019s failure to seek accountability, calling the Regents\u2019 recent move to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/09\/27\/us-news\/ex-gov-pataki-who-put-regents-in-place-rips-incredibly-stupid-axing-of-tests-really-sad-day-for-new-york\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">end the exams-based Regents diploma<\/a> \u201cincredibly stupid\u201d and a cynical bid \u201cto disguise the fact that too many New York state schools are failing to educate our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of doing the appropriate testing so that corrective measures could be taken to improve [kids\u2019 performance], they simply get rid of the tests to hide their failure,\u201d explains Pataki.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPost Editorial Board<\/p>\n<p>Scrapping the Regents diploma outright followed years of SED dumbing down the exams to keep graduation numbers up; now they\u2019ve eliminated the bar entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the \u201csmart\u201d students can still take Regents exams to show advanced proficiency \u2014 but now it\u2019ll be easy for schools to look OK even though they demand nothing of the kids, who\u2019ll mostly only realize they\u2019ve been robbed later on.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGet opinions and commentary from our columnists\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter!\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a fluke of the state Constitution, choosing the Regents is de facto up to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, who sold his soul to the standards-hating teachers unions to acquire his post \u2014 but Hochul, and Gov.
