{"id":359613,"date":"2026-09-29T08:40:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T08:40:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/359613\/"},"modified":"2026-09-29T08:40:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T08:40:13","slug":"bk-dems-chair-rodneyse-bichotte-hermelyn-steps-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/359613\/","title":{"rendered":"BK Dems Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn steps down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BOROUGHWIDE \u2014 ASSEMBLYMEMBER RODNEYSE BICHOTTE Hermelyn told <a href=\"https:\/\/ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/2026\/09\/28\/brooklyn-party-chair-will-not-seek-reelection-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NY1 on Monday<\/a> evening that she will no longer seek reelection as Brooklyn Democratic Party chair, though the power struggles within the party continue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bichotte Hermelyn has led the party for the past six years and was the first woman and first Black woman to lead the party. She originally intended to run for reelection, but after this June\u2019s primary, an opposition group aligned with New Kings Democrats and a coalition called Brooklyn Can\u2019t Wait claimed enough district leader seats to make up a majority within the Brooklyn Democratic Party.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The New Kings Democrats announced plans to elect District Leader Julio Pe\u00f1a III in an internal party election in the fall. In response, Bichotte Hermelyn proposed a change to the party\u2019s bylaws that would expand its Executive Committee, meaning the opposition group\u2019s majority could be challenged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The changes faced widespread opposition and were <a href=\"https:\/\/brooklyneagle.com\/415360\/judge-invalidates-brooklyn-dems-rule-changes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ruled null and void<\/a> shortly after in a lawsuit. However, the decision was then appealed and awaits a final decision from the Appellate Division. In the meantime, the party\u2019s current leadership <a href=\"https:\/\/brooklyneagle.com\/417485\/brooklyn-democratic-organizational-meeting-descends-into-chaos-as-fight-over-party-control-continues\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has voted<\/a> for the rule change to pass.
