Ocasio-Cortez, 36, has built much of her national profile around those same issues, amplified by a formidable social-media presence that mixes highly produced policy videos with direct-to-camera posts from her phone. Those posts can vary from insider views of Capitol Hill sausagemaking to deeply personal accounts of her life, like a recent series documenting her decision to freeze her eggs.

But it’s one thing to be popular online, and another to mount a consequential presidential bid or snatch a seat from an incumbent US senator in your own party. While Ocasio-Cortez is celebrated by progressives, she’s also signaled an intention to distance herself from some of the more divisive positions associated with the progressive movement during the pandemic era, including calls to defund the police. A campaign for statewide or national office would test whether the enthusiasm she commands among younger and progressive voters extends beyond her base.

In an August interview with ABC News, Ocasio-Cortez quoted a friend saying “woke 1 was crazy” as she discussed progressive candidates seeking distance from past remarks and policy positions.

Ocasio-Cortez is expected to easily win a fifth House term this November in a district that includes parts of Queens and the Bronx. Since first winning office in 2018, the Bronx native has expanded her reach beyond the early image of her as a member of the progressive “Squad,” increasingly emphasizing legislative collaboration while building one of the Democratic Party’s largest fundraising operations.

In several focus groups conducted over the summer by political consultant Rachel Janfaza, Ocasio-Cortez was considered an effective communicator by both fans and detractors.

“Young people appreciate that she has personal experience going through the types of concerns that they go through every day,” said Janfaza, author of a newsletter on Gen Z politics. “She embodies the traits that young people are looking for in a politician, even if they don’t actually agree with her on principle.”

Ahead of the midterms, she donated $300,000 to New York Democrats, a display of party-building muscle from a politician who has raised more than $32 million since 2025.

And her tour of upstate New York has fed speculation that she could challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, 75, a frequent target of progressive criticism over his centrist approach. She recently told the New York Times either a Senate or White House bid is possible.

Ocasio-Cortez visited Buffalo on Thursday and made a surprise appearance Saturday at Ithaca’s annual Apple Harvest Festival. She’s scheduled to stop in Syracuse on Monday as she campaigns to boost Democratic turnout ahead of the November midterms.

On Sunday, at an event organized with More Perfect University — a liberal campus initiative launched this year to counter Turning Point USA, Ocasio-Cortez fielded questions from students and other local residents.

She criticized what Cornell has dubbed its “expressive activity” policy, which opponents say restricts protests and other campus speech, and attacked the university’s handling of rape allegations made by a student two years ago that have resurfaced in a lawsuit.

“The culture of rape, sexual assault, and pedophilia is protected in elite institutions across the United States, including Cornell University in this instance,” Ocasio-Cortez said to loud applause. She also recounted being inappropriately touched while she was a student at Boston University.

In May, she appeared in a series with More Perfect Union, of which More Perfect University is an initiative, traveling to Morgan County, Georgia — a county Trump won by 70% — to examine the impact of data centers on surrounding communities.

She sat down with Republican voters there before returning to Washington with jars of discolored water she said came from local wells and calling for investigations into the impact of data center construction on local water supplies.

She returned to the issue on Sunday, assailing the growth of data centers and artificial intelligence and calling for greater restrictions.

Attack Ads

In the New York Times interview, Ocasio-Cortez said she is weighing her electability and the state of the Democratic Party, including what she described as the political realities facing a Latina woman after the presidential defeats of Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton.

“I’m not naïve to the fact that we are living under a very regressive administration,” said Ocasio-Cortez.

Her prominence also gives Republicans a ready-made foil as they seek to define Democratic candidates elsewhere in New York. The Congressional Leadership Fund, a House GOP leadership-backed super PAC, recently ran an ad linking Ocasio-Cortez to Cait Conley, the Democrat challenging Republican Representative Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th District. Door hangers paid for by Elon Musk’s super-PAC similarly featured Ocasio-Cortez alongside Senator Bernie Sanders, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Conley.

For supporters gathered in Ithaca, however, her ability to generate that kind of attention is part of the appeal.

“It’s just a matter of getting the right movement behind you, and I think it’s there,” said Rïse Peacock, a 34-year-old organizer from Corning, New York, who volunteered at the Sunday event. “Folks are eager to hear something different and to hear something new.”

More stories like this are available on bloomberg.com.

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) — Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s policy prescriptions were familiar: establishing health care for all, abolishing ICE,…

[38
878,27337,128,9,24,63,129,131,130,817
post-359773","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-the-bronx","tag-alexandria-ocasio-cortez","tag-bloomberg","tag-bronx","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-the-bronx","tag-the-bronx-headlines","tag-the-bronx-news","tag-upstate-new-york
["GET
