The New York State Sheriffs’ Association are asking neighbors to be aware of a recent prevalent scam occurring across New York state. <\/p>\n
Scammers are calling residents and are impersonating as law enforcement; either as deputies, officers, investigators, or other members of a Sheriff’s office. These scammers may also know personal information about you such as your full name, address, etc. <\/p>\n
These scammers will attempt to extort money from you by making false threats of legal obligations such as missed jury duty, an arrest warrant, or an outstanding fine. They may also call from a spoofed Sheriff’s phone number, which they do by falsifying the information that will appear on your caller ID (i.e., calling another person from your cell phone, but it appears as if your mother’s phone number were calling them instead), which is highly illegal.<\/p>\n
After making the false claims, they will then demand payment over the phone. These payment methods will be demanded as either personal banking details, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers. <\/p>\n
Real law enforcement agencies will never demand payment or payment details over the phone in order to avoid an arrest. No legitimate government agency will ever accept, or ask to be provided, a gift card as a valid form of payment, especially over the phone. <\/p>\n
If you do receive one of these calls, you are urged to hang up and call your local sheriff’s office directly to report it immediately. <\/p>\n
Scammers are most successful when they are able to instill panic and a sense of urgency in their victims, the Sheriff’s Association said.
