DUBLIN, Calif. — The director of engineering for New York Times Games was allegedly shot and killed by his in-laws<\/a> in Dublin, California on Saturday.<\/p>\n

New details shed light on a restraining order, pending divorce, child custody battle, child abuse and domestic violence.<\/p>\n

Jonathan McKinsey, 40, was gunned down at the Dublin Sports Complex around 3 p.m. on September 26.<\/p>\n

Witnesses told ABC affiliate KGO they heard multiple gunshots and saw the two suspects shoot his son-in-law to death.<\/p>\n

Police were able to track down the 77-year-old married couple at a nearby intersection, and arrest them for first degree murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, and child abuse.<\/p>\n

The suspects are being held at Santa Rita Jail.<\/p>\n

The New York Times confirmed to KGO that McKinsey was the head engineer for New York Times Games and had worked there since 2023.<\/p>\n

“This has all the aspects of a deeply personal revenge type killing,” said Steven Clark, legal expert.<\/p>\n

Police did not elaborate on a possible motive to the crime.<\/p>\n

“It’s going to be important for law enforcement to dig deep into the relationship between these parties and the victim’s wife,” he said.<\/p>\n

Court documents show McKinsey was in the midst of a contentious divorce and custody battle with the suspect’s daughter.<\/p>\n

Both sides accuse each other of domestic violence.<\/p>\n

In 2025, McKinsey was also charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.<\/p>\n

Court documents alleged that he hit his 6-year-old son in the face. And at one point, left his then 2 year old home alone for more than an hour.<\/p>\n

McKinsey pled not guilty and was expected to appear in court for this again next week.<\/p>\n

“Whether the parents had reached out and tried to stop the alleged abuse, and whether this was their only means of taking action. Certainly, you cannot take the law into your own hands like this, but that could play a factor in how this case plays out,” Clark said.<\/p>\n

Clark believes the suspects could also face child abuse charges since the shooting happened at a public park where there were children playing, as any of those bullets could have gone the wrong way and hit children.<\/p>\n

The suspects are expected to be in arraigned in court on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
