At approximately 6:05 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, a commuter was discovered unconscious and unresponsive on the roadbed of the northbound A train at the Utica Avenue Station, near Fulton Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) tells PEOPLE.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The man, identified as 57-year-old Yaw Boahene from the Bronx, was pronounced dead at the scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Investigators said that Boahene’s bag, believed to be either a backpack or a shopping bag, became trapped in the doors of the subway train as it was preparing to leave the station, according to The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n As the train pulled away from the platform, the man was dragged alongside before striking a pole and suffering severe trauma.\u00a0<\/p>\n Police tell PEOPLE that the investigation surrounding the incident remains ongoing, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine Boahene’s cause of death.\u00a0<\/p>\n “His bag got caught in the door and the train just kept moving,” a witness told WABC<\/a>. “I didn’t see the man for a while until the train kept moving and then you could sort of hear the sound.”<\/p>\n
