For their latest single, \u2018Where the Goth Girls At?\u2019, Queens of the Stone Age<\/a> place themselves in their very own horrific short film.<\/p>\n

Ahead of their upcoming album, Perfecth, the band has unearthed two singles, the acoustic \u2018Easy Street\u2019 and the languid groove of \u2018Insignificant Other.\u2019 Now, \u2018Where the Goth Girls At?\u2019 emerges as the most adrenalised of the three, driven by lust and fantasies.<\/p>\n

In the song\u2019s music video, they set the scene at a factory, where frontman Josh Homme<\/a> is cast at the helm, keeping a watchful eye over the crew of navy jumpsuit-clad workers. He sings into an intercom microphone, a lit cigarette glued to his hand amidst the overflowing ashtray that rests on his desk. We watch with him as we are introduced to the employees, and a thread becomes clear: the goths are taking over.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the \u2018lead goth\u2019, dancer\/artist Scarlett Kapella flips off the camera before beginning to recruit each member of the factory into an unspoken, gory goth cult; with each kiss, the workers spew a gooey, black bile before emerging in leather and black makeup. One worker screams into an intercom, \u201cIt\u2019s all fucked up, man! Please help, everybody\u2019s fucking goth!\u201d<\/p>\n

If you can get past the cringeworthy title, the track harnesses Queens of the Stone Age\u2019s desert-rock signature<\/a> into a slow groove, where Homme\u2019s vocals sound as though they\u2019re trapped in a smoky haze, falsettos vibrating along with the stomp of the melody. The lyrics, meanwhile, paint an intriguing portrait of girls doing their makeup at the mall, reminiscent of a bad tattoo, and \u201csterile eyes get blue applied persuasions\u201d. They smoke clove cigarettes, wear black and run away from the sun, all clich\u00e9s of Homme\u2019s teenage fantasies, living in the suburban Palm Desert in California.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up\u2026watching the goth girls working the counter at JCPenney and giving goth makeovers to the old ladies, that\u2019s when I knew the only place I want to be is where the goth girls at,\u201d he explained in a statement after the song\u2019s release, \u201cTeenage love, ain\u2019t it grand?\u201d<\/p>\n

There is also a curious line in the chorus of \u2018Where The Goth Girls At?\u2019 that points to something deeper, beyond his recollections of his teenage years: \u201cNever felt so alive as the day I almost died\u201d. Near-death experiences<\/a> were, tragically, not foreign to Homme, who had endured brushes with danger in his life on a number of occasions. Speaking with Consequence Of Sound<\/a>, he detailed an instance from when he was a child.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think everyone in this life is either experiencing a near-life or near-death experience, or you certainly will if you haven\u2019t,\u201d he explained, \u201cThere\u2019s a bit of euphoria post those [experiences]. I almost drowned when I was 12, and it was really wonderful in the days and weeks post that [incident]. Food tastes amazing, and the subset was fuckin\u2019 juicy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was quick to caution against any speculation: \u201cI\u2019m not saying you should go out and get yourself a near-death experience,\u201d he clarified, \u201cbut certainly those occur, and that euphoria, it takes a while to dissipate, and it\u2019s hard not to feel the joy in those moments after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a theatrical flair, \u2018Where The Goth Girls At?\u2019 weaves humour with the thrill of being alive. And as the closing line repeats, \u201cSun don\u2019t chase them all away\u201d, we\u2019re not just reminded of Homme\u2019s memories of \u201cteenage love\u201d but of the sheer joy in being able to look back in time.<\/p>\n
