{"id":360458,"date":"2026-09-30T04:10:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T04:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/360458\/"},"modified":"2026-09-30T04:10:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T04:10:13","slug":"super-el-nino-could-bring-more-winter-noreasters-to-tri-state-nbc-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/360458\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Super\u2019 El Ni\u00f1o could bring more winter nor\u2019easters to tri-state \u2013 NBC New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The early fall nor\u2019easter that chewed away the beaches up and down the East Coast may very well put the tri-state area behind the 8-ball as we head into a winter dominated by a super El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>An El Ni\u00f1o, by definition, is warmer-than-normal water in the equatorial Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America.\u00a0The ocean temperatures here influence global atmospheric wind flow and, in turn, the winter weather patterns we experience in the northern hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9-29-el-nino.png\" loading=\"lazy\"   alt=\" \"\/><\/p>\n<p>Typically, El Ni\u00f1o winters favor weather patterns that promote nor\u2019easters. A moisture-laden Pacific jet stream sweeps across the southeastern U.S. and up the east coast, funneling deep moisture our way.\u00a0Storm systems develop along the pacific jet stream and pound the coast.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9-29-jet-stream.png\" loading=\"lazy\"   alt=\" \"\/><\/p>\n<p>The storm tracks are typically far enough south to keep them offshore from the tri-state, which can deliver the pounding northeasterly winds that further erode beaches.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9-29-el-nino-northeast.png\" loading=\"lazy\"   alt=\" \"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tStorm Team 4Storm Team 4<\/p>\n<p>This year, we\u2019re heading into winter under &#8220;super&#8221; El Ni\u00f1o conditions, meaning the temperature anomaly in the equatorial Pacific is unusually high \u2013 around 3 degrees above normal \u2013 and forecasted to increase into the heart of winter.<\/p>\n<p>That could mean multiple, super-charged nor\u2019easters for the East Coast, each one lashing our already-battered beaches.
