New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a comprehensive plan to combat antisemitism and hate crimes against Jews in New York City on Tuesday, aiming to appease critics who said his condemnations of Israel amount to antisemitism. Mamdani said Jews make up only 12% of the city\u2019s population but are victims of about half of the city\u2019s recorded hate crimes, and he framed the initiative as a responsibility shared by \u201call of us to change it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s strategy included increasing security funding for Jewish synagogues, placing greater emphasis on including Jewish history in public school curricula, and pledging to highlight important Jewish cultural and religious sites as part of the mayor\u2019s daily administration of city affairs. Mamdani also said the city would increase funding for grants to community organizations focused on preventing hate crimes and supporting survivors, and he said the city would work with public schools to address discrimination complaints and launch public awareness campaigns about the city Human Rights law and how to report suspected discrimination.<\/p>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dedicated part of his UN address last week to attacking Mamdani, accusing him of \u201cspreading lies about Israel\u201d and describing him as the \u201canti-Semitic New York City mayor.\u201d Mamdani\u2019s opponents also included Israel\u2019s Consul General in New York, Ofir Akunis, who wrote on his X account: \u201cMoney does not buy principles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, praised elements of the mayor\u2019s plan but called on Mamdani to lower the temperature on his rhetoric about Israel, saying \u201cMayor Mamdani must also commit to stopping his harsh anti-Israel rhetoric.\u201d The Anti-Defamation League criticized the plan for not adopting an official definition of antisemitism, and Scott Richman said, \u201cI think the absence of a definition of antisemitism undercuts the report tremendously.\u201d<\/p>\n

The plan\u2019s funding package included $6.4 million for hate crime prevention and survivor support, $4.5 million for Jewish cultural institutions like the Holocaust Memorial, and $1 million for synagogue and Hebrew school security, as the Mamdani administration described it in unveiling the strategy. The city also planned to provide field trips for every eighth grader in the city\u2019s public schools to the Museum of Jewish Heritage, while the administration said it would expand education about Jewish history and cultural contributions.<\/p>\n
