A discussion of Hitler’s sexually transmitted infections. A re-write of Hamlet’s famous speech warning “nightmares may come” from “that sleep of love.” Internet memes. A guidebook published in 1995. These are some of the shocking items that masqueraded as educational materials in sex ed classes across New York State during the 2023-2024 school year.

In the NYCLU’s new report, Stereotypes, Stigma, and Silence: How New York Fails Students on Sex Ed, we uncover and dissect what New York school districts are actually teaching students. The results should alarm all of us.

Our report examines the 2023-2024 sex ed curriculum from 50 school districts across New York State.

We found:

A third of districts taught medically inaccurate information. New York educators must follow standards in English, math, science, and history classes, but when it comes to the vital topic of students’ bodies and sexual health, New York leaves districts, schools and teachers to their own devices. This creates uneven and sometimes appalling results.

Depending on where a student lives, they might receive comprehensive sex education that teaches medically accurate information, helps them build healthy relationships, and supports their understanding of who they are. Or they might be subjected to homespun junk science riddled with misinformation – and end up searching the internet or asking ChatGPT for answers.

This is because New York has no statewide mandate for comprehensive sex education. With the exception of HIV/AIDS instruction, there isn’t even a requirement that schools teach sex ed at all.

Legislation introduced in Albany would require public schools to teach medically accurate and inclusive sex education that is age-appropriate and reflects national standards and best practices. Research shows that quality sex ed curricula helps schools combat bullying and discrimination as well as sexual harassment and violence. It also helps reduce poor health outcomes and promotes healthy relationships.

So many New York students aren’t getting science-based information that helps them make healthy decisions and respects their identities. Our kids deserve better.

A discussion of Hitler’s sexually transmitted infections.
