A New York City man is facing charges after U.S. Customs and Border Protection<\/a> (CBP) officers at Washington Dulles International Airport allegedly found 65 pounds of khat in his baggage.<\/p>\n

CBP officers referred 24-year-old Bakari Wally, a U.S. citizen from the Bronx, for secondary examination after he arrived in Washington from Casablanca, Morocco, on the night of Wednesday, Sept. 23. In his checked baggage, officers found bags of a “dried organic substance” that field-tested positive for khat.<\/p>\n

In total, the baggage contained 29.6 kilograms, or 65 pounds, 4 ounces of khat, carrying an estimated street value of around $8,000.<\/p>\n

Khat, also known as African salad or Abyssinian tea, is grown in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration<\/a>, khat contains two stimulants: cathinone, a Schedule I controlled substance, and cathine, a Schedule IV controlled substance.<\/p>\n

Khat is typically chewed for a stimulant effect, and the dried leaves may also be boiled into tea.<\/p>\n

CBP officers seized the khat. Wally was turned over to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police. He was arrested early Thursday on charges of possession with the intent to distribute and transporting a controlled substance into the Commonwealth of Virginia.<\/p>\n

“Travelers who smuggle illegal products to the United States will quickly learn that Customs and Border Protection will find it and we will work with our law enforcement partners to pursue severe consequences, including felony criminal charges as this traveler is facing,” said CBP Area Port Director Christine Waugh, Area Port of Washington, D.C. “Smugglers should know that the risk of prison time is not worth what transnational criminal organizations pay them to violate our nation’s laws.”<\/p>\n
