Facts About Snow Leopards

Snow leopards are striking, of course, but they are also one of the world’s most fascinating big cats. These elusive animals are built for life. They have spotted white-gray coats that help them blend into rocky landscapes of the high mountains of Central Asia, and sizeable paws that act like natural snowshoes. Their long, fluffy tails help them balance while climbing steep terrain and also stay warm in cold weather.

Protecting snow leopards is so important, since these beautiful cats are currently considered a Vulnerable species, with only an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 left in the wild in Asia. There, they face shrinking habitats, fewer natural prey animals, and extinction from humans, which is terrible, in the form of poaching, hunting, and trade.

The Bronx Zoo has been caring for snow leopards for more than a century. It was the first zoo in the United States to showcase these big cats back in 1903.

Since then, the zoo has welcomed more than 80 snow leopard cubs and continues to support the species through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan, a program that helps protect the health and future of snow leopards in human care.
